Escort & Sierra Uprights
Here's a new one for you!
I'm wondering if you can answer the following questions. Would a Sierra upright fit onto the Mk1 Escort track control arm and could I use a Mk1
escort track rod end on my steering rack or are the radiuses different on the balljoints?
I'd also like to know the height of the sierra upright.
The reason for these questions is that if it all fits I may have an easy upgrade to my Dutton's front brakes which are currently bog standard
mk1 Escort disks.
Hopefully the picture will be attached so you can see how the setup works, but basically the Escort's strut is cut down to a suitable height and
an Austin Maxi balljoint is then fixed to the top which then goes into the upper wishbone.
If all goes well I'll find another sierra and persuade it to part with it's uprights.

Can't help but ....
Why do you want to do this? I thought general consensus was Cotrina (which are very similar if not identical to escort) brakes are good enough....
Also, how easy is it to cut down the front strut? Okay i'm guessing you didn't do it but does anyone know, is this a simple replacement
for the cortina uprights ?

Personally if you want to upgrade the brakes I'd of thought putting a spacer in the calipers and capri 2.8i vented discs would be a good move.
If you want to re-engineer the front corners its a lot more work for little gain (with sierra uprights/brakes) and will make it a bit heavier. The
escort upright with the cut down strut is IMHO no different in theory to the mushroom insert used in a sierra upright.

Sorry about the size of the pic, first one I've attached.
I want to do this as the Dutton is already there and the cortina strut would involve re-engineering the front end, whereas 'just' bolting
in a sierra strut with a maxi balljoint on top would mean I get the bigger more modern brakes easily.
An alternative, which is quite common in Dutton circles, is to cut down a capri strut to the right height, which I may do if the sierra uprights are
unusable.
I'm interested in the sierra route as I'm thinking about going for the GTS de dion rear end, so if I buy a sierra for that I would have
the front brakes and would save me hunting for a 2.8i capri front end.
Interestingly, Sylva did a similar conversion to the escort hubs, I'll hunt out the pic and scan it in sometime, could be worth thinking about
for a single donor route as I'm sure other mcpherson strut donor cars exist.

Just fit Mexico disks and P16 or M16 calipers with decent pads

Thanks, I may well stick with what I've got then and just change the disks.
I'm going to repost the pictures I've got of the Dutton on another thread about donor uprights together with the Sylva type just in case
other people are wondering how to reuse mcpherson strut style front ends.
