IRS with rear disc brakes?
Anybody else running rear discs.
I have an MK Indy with hub carriers made for rear discs,its more expensive i know but i would like thoughts from others??
Drums and diffs for them are easier to find,i'm getting a little confused am i going the right way??

I have discs on mine, wouldn't use anything else!
If you are going 4x4 diff, check that the outer driveshafts pass through the hub carriers,

I have been looking out for a GLS or GLSi as they are cheap,dont really want a whole car as rear undercarriage is all i need.
If a whole one comes along and its cheap enough,might as well spares always welcome.

I've got a J reg sierra 2.0 dohc GLS and it comes with Drums. If you do go looking for one make sure you ask about discs or drums before you go to
see it. I think as a rule if it has ABS it has discs, mine doesn't.

Yes i know,have been on a wild goose chase already.There is a 4x4 estate diff drive shafts and discs in the ads,but bit to far away.If anybody wants a
regular sierra its sierras R us around my way,they are everywhere.
I think GLSi is the one,got to be cheaper than 4x4 or cossie.

I paid £40 for the complete subframe and contents off a xr4x4, it seems the going rate around chesterfield,

Bob,
If it helps you source them at all by adding another model, a work colleague's H-reg xr4i has all round discs. Unfortunately, it has the DOHC engine
so is no good for anything else!
Amusingly, he won't let me anywhere near it with a tape measure or anything 'coz he thinks I'm going to " 'alf inch" bits off it!
What a thought! ;-)
I was going to go for one of them thinking I'd finally found a Sierra with all round discs- was so disappointed to find it was DOHC! :-(
What other models (other than 4x4, vr6 and xr4i) have rear discs? Anyone know?
Only ask because I'd prefer to get everything off just the one donor!

Is your work mate going to be selling his Xr4i soon? I'm looking for another DOHC engined sierra and the discs would be a bonus. Let me know if he's
selling it and for how much. No silly prices though.

Hi Dunc,
Don't worry I've already been down that route! Unfortunately he's not selling and having known him for a while I'm not sure if you'd want it. For
a start he does 1000 miles a week and hasn't changed the oil in 6months or so! Not sure if I fancy an engine that's been treated like that! Even if
he does long journeys (ie minimising engine wear) that's gotta have knackered it pretty badly hasn't it?
Took him about 6weeks to sort out the dodgy wheel bearing I had to point out to him.
Generally gives you the impression that it may be a car that's not going to last him much longer!
Come to think of it, other than the last car he had (Carlton) of which the gearbox disintegrated, he's never sold an old car as they've all got
written off!
There'd probably be a few downsides to buying it too!

When in a position of extreme technical ignorance such as myself the last thing I want to do is contradict anyone (or to coin a phrase- be a techno
Nazi) but the Haynes I have says that "ABS is available on all models except the P100" and also "Non- ABS models are fitted with rear disc brakes
or rear drum brakes" so (assuming Haynes is correct?!!! Foolish I know) unfortunately those of us looking for discs can't rely on the presence of
ABS.
If there isn't a list somewhere on the web could we put together a list (maybe somne sort of faq) of models and dates with/without DOHC or SOHC,
Discs or drums, regular of later '205' Pinto engines?
Just one of my random thoughts!

Just to qualify those disc brake/ABS statements, I've got the blue Haynes, code 0903 on the spine. It says Haynes Publishing 1996 on inside cover.
Page 10.2, first column, paragraphs 5&4 respectively.
Not that I'm trying to avoid being flamed or anything.... :-)

If you do find a list let me know, I've been trying to figure out which cars have rear discs too, I found the Haynes unreliable and didn't list
actual model variations. Parkers used car guide isn't much better and ford being ford I bet you'd find some sierra's have a disc on one side and a
drum on the other. Let me know of any models you do find with discs.

£40.Right thats it,i've had enough of london and there london prices i'm selling up and moving up there.
I got my sierra rack & hubs from a breakers in doncaster £35 cheaper than london and i never left the house(TNT next day)
If you can find another diff and discs and bits there's a drink in it for you.
The breakers at Dony did tell me my £ is worth £2 up there.

Is it a straight swop between the disc/hub and drums/hub? What I mean is, is the disc and hub part of the donor all I need from it to then bolt it
onto the drive shafts from the IRS dif'?
If the answer is no (and I really hope it isn't!) does that mean I need to get the dif' off the disc donor aswell? In which case, is it then a
straight fit onto the prop of the first donor?
Yours hoping discs are less effort than they are beginning to seem,

Sorry mate but i have some bad news,get your sierra haynes manual in one hand and hold a glass with a treble in other(single malt of course)hit
yourself over the head with book while drinking NO gulping the scotch.
Now then,the diff you and i want are the lobro joint type,this is where the drive shaft is bolted to the diff with 6 hex head bolts and the other end
of shaft is bolted too.
the one we dont want is called tripod joints,the shaft on this one is more or less a push fit for want of a better word.This is literaly all held
together or in by the hub.
So we need to talk to dave in chesterfield to see if there is a good supply at the breakers up there.
There you go,its not that bad is it!!!

Blimey! What a task to have set ourselves!!
Obviously I could build it with drums and change later but I know full well that when I've finished the car I'm not really going to want to lay it
up for months changing to discs so it'll never happen.
Being Ford this may be a silly question but do all the Fords with discs have this particular dif' or can I take it that out of the already limited
selection of Sierra's with discs only a few have this dif'.
Oh well, if I didn't like challenges- why the heck am I building a Locost!

by the way I paid £25 for the rack, hubs, discs and front calipers from a Sierra.
He also has a really nice 2.1 injection ford ohc engine stood doin' nowt

Acording to my book of words granada scorpio
(all disc rears) are only 1" wider at the
back than a sierra,as to the other bits
bolt holes etc dont know but worth a try.

Hello everybody
was in a ford garage getting my hescort fixed today,they said some granny diffs will fit and some wont which was helpfull!!
there were 2 different diff casings evidently ,but no cross over dates just used willy nilly.
i'm now confused as they must all have the same fittings too be compatible?

Seems a bit of a bugger making list of rear disc sierras,seen three today.
1/sierra hatch K reg 2.0 GLS
2/saphire J reg 2.0 GLSi
3/ " " " " Ghia
All had discs,but have also seen these cars with drums.

At the moment I'm running about in a J reg hatchback, 2.0 dohc GLSi but unfortunately it has drums. I'll look out for the others for my rear setup,
dohc engine is a cracker.
