R1 Engine Oil - links please
Hi chaps,
trying to find what oil to use on my 5pw R1. All the sites at work that are forum based seemed to be blocked from my google searches.
Heard Castrol GPS semi synthetic is good, but what viscosity 10w-30? 40? ahhhh!!!!

10/40 is a good weight.
What engine oil is in there now? Semi Synth, fully synth? Mineral?
You can swap and change but I have read swapping can lead to clutch slip (i think it is becuase the old type of oil contaminates the clutch plates and
the new type of oil acts as a barrier thereby reducing friction - therefore reducing drive)
You dont want clutch slip in a bec so I sugest you check out what you have and match it.
That happens in bikes anyway.
I'm sure someone clever wil be along soon to put us both straight.

DON'T use car oil in the bike engine, the addatives are not compatible with the wet clutch. I use Halfords fully synthetic bike oil in my R1, I
ride it very hard and never had any problems.

For my ST I use Putolene semi-synthetic
For an R1 I might push the boat out and get something fully synthetic. Semi-synthetic is (at the end of the day) a bit of a fabrication IE it's
normal oil with modifiers in it but people go for it (me included) in the same way that most people don't go for the house wine in a restaurant
but the second cheapest (even though it's often worse quality than the house!!).... but I digress....

Ideal oil viscosity for an R1 is 10W40.
I personally have used Castrol GPS and R4 (fully synth) with good results. There is no reason why other (quality) brands won't be equally
effective. Nice thing about Castrol is you can get it almost anywhere (including Halfords).
