Type 3 gearbox
Rik178m@hotmail.com - 19/10/09 at 06:40 PM

Hi all, cant find any info on a ford type 3 gearbox! My mate had a mexico 4speed in his westfield so while looking for one of those (2000E is it?) I found the above. I already have a type 9 5speed but I'm open to options.
Would the type 3 be any good? Is it close ratio like the mexico box? I'm not after a really high top end from my zetec.
Already googled with not much of a result.

Is it not the one I sent you a pic of?

It is indeed. I must of miss read your thread as I thought it was meant to be a type 9. Now I'm abit lost

Had a look in the burton power catalog and I'm non the wiser as to if it's the one I'm after.

Ideally I'd like to find a mexico close ratio box.

Which one ?
The one on the right is what I have fitted and I managed to identify it as a type 3 gearbox.

I have a link somewhere possibly at work I will try and dig it out for you.

Is there any way of telling? As I've got a 4 speed box sat in the garage taking up space and I want rid

rallyingden - 19/10/09 at 08:49 PM

Thefreak...
The Zetec inside link ^^^ above ^^^ is good for identifying which box you have

Sorry only saw 1 at a quick glance. Its the box on the right with the bellhousing from the left.

Stewart do you mind me posting the pics mate?

thefreak - 19/10/09 at 09:04 PM

Not at all... saves me doing it
And I've got a red bell housing like the one on the left if you wanted that too. keep tripping over it in the conservatory

Am I going to be better off using a type 3 4speed or type 9 5speed witha a 2ltr zetec?
Not sure of the diff ratio i have yet.

I was looking for a close ratio 4speed mexico box as recommended by a mate but is the type 3 a good alternative?

rallyingden - 19/10/09 at 09:19 PM

I am no expert on Zetec's but from reading past posts I suspect the type 9 would be more suitable. It does however depend on your final drive ratio and what YOU want from the car.

Sorry if this does not answer your question

Rik178m@hotmail.com - 19/10/09 at 09:21 PM

It does mate. I'll be keeping the type 9 for when I need a higher top end. Was thinking about a 4speed for the tight and twisties. but not sure of the ratios on the type 3. Is it close ratio?

Hi
Did just leve a post on the haynes. But be carefull with the clutch are as it comes out at 90 degrees with the box and will hit the transmission tunnel. The type nine is at around 45 degrees and only just clears.
