Foam for dash
mad4x4 - 28/1/04 at 03:14 PM

Tring to get my dash started, I using MDF, But it needs padding before covering with Vinyl.

Would using a camping mat ("Carry Mat" do the SVA guide says that if it is padded or soft (not solid)

quote:

3. The lower edge of the instrument panel shall be rounded to a radius of curvature of not less than 19mm, or if it is covered with non-rigid material, not less than 5mm.

Does this mean that padding must be at least 5mm Thick to avoid the 19mm Radius edge?

quoting what i read before somewhere, if you try to do the 5mm approach then the covered edge must not be feelable thru the padding, even with a firm press.

How thick is the mat? I read somewhere that 1/4” foam gave a surprisingly spongy dash. Suppose it needs some experimenting with

Thats what i use, looks good with the vinyl, two layers for the bottom radius.

Mad4x4, I used an old camping mat and also did the 19mm radius too. I used a large tube of EvoStik (sp?) and quite a few staples.

Doesn't look bad IMO

While I'm here, has anyone got any 5 or 10mm perspex approx. 350mm x 250mm in size to cover the clocks?

I might be able to get hold of some for you from work, will have to wait a couple of weeks though as I'm away playing in the north sea, but if you still need some give me a shout after the 18th of Feb.

I'm fairly sure I've got some mooching about the hanger, use it for picking up drill hole's and the like. Good shit

Ok a standard carry mat if about 4.6mm £6 thick you can also get thicker £10. This was from TISO camping store. I guess you'lll get cheaper if you go to some backwater.

How did you do the 19mm radius, By hand or with a router - RoadkillUK?

I might be missing somthing here but if you dash has a 19 mm rad doesn't that mean the dash has to be at least 19mm thick or are you alowed to have say a 10 mm dash with an edging strip with 19 mm rad?

Roadkill I have some perspex in the shed how much do you need?

sorry 350x250 u2u me if you want it, the perspex that is!

Liam,

as i inderstandi it you can have a solid dash mase of whatever you like so long as if it is un padded it has a 19mm lower edge.

This edge does not need to be padded, it can be solid MDF if you want.

JoelP - 2/2/04 at 02:05 PM

and remember its a radius not a diameter...

Liam

Made the dash from 10mm MDF with bottom edge built up with 2 pieces of 19mm radius wood quadrant glued to the bottom edge. Couple of pics in photo archive. Will be covering with expanded vinyl from Woolies.

Wicket, sounds like the same way I made mine, stuck a piece of mdf on the back at the bottom.
