Heater - what is involved?
RK - 3/1/09 at 05:07 PM

What are the parts and steps required for installing a heater? I've done a search and don't find anything telling me exactly what the parts are that one may need, where the hoses go etc. I see a lot of heater fans and cores for sale, but isn't there something else too?

I'd rather deal with this now before I get any further along wiring etc..

I started off by getting a secondhand heater from a Westfield with the assorted plumbing. Wasn't too difficult to fit but took up far to much room either behind the dash or under the bonnet.

In the end I sold the bits and bought 2 of the mini electric heaters you see advertised (loads on fleabay) and wired them in, moounted behind the dash with suitable venting to blow onto screen. Passsed SVA no problem (dont know what you have in Canada?) and works as well as anything will in a Locost.

Cheers

Gary

The mini electric ones seem to be a lot easier don't they?

If I build another Locost I think I will use an electric heated screen Don't tend to get a lot of heat from my heater apart from keeping the screen demisted.

I ran a pipe from between the engine and the thermostat through the heater core and a heater tap to a tee piece just after the radiator. A 3 speed heater fan blows air through it but only the 2 fastest speeds are wired up.

The R1 engine provides plenty of heat for spring or autumn use at road speeds below about 50. Higher speeds or colder weather reduce the effectiveness of the heater but it is still better than nothing.

Perhaps a lesser engine would make more waste heat. Pinto engines may have a use after all.
