Dash help!
f1ngers - 26/1/09 at 11:09 PM

Today I thought I would start on the dash. panel. It is one of those ABS carbon fibre look alike ones but the internal 19mm return is too narrow although the supplier assured me it was the correct width for my ST.
First thoughts are to heat and reform the left and right hand side around some tube to the correct dimensions.
Is that possible or will I just make a mess of it?
Does anyone have any other ideas how I could solve this one?
I can't return it as I purchased it some years ago and I am trying to push on with the build to beat the SVA deadline.
Thx

Why is that a problem? Can you not just trim the outer part to suit the shape of your scuttle, and run some rubber edge trim around the bottom for SVA?

I did consider rubber trim around the bottom but doesn't the internal section have to meet the 19mm radius requirement for SVA across the width of the dash?

What about ditching it till after the SVA and using a lump of wood?

Now that is a good idea that you should consider!!

try the heat gun on th scrap corner first and if it works OK! go for it!"

Cut it to fit and then just trim the outer bottom edge with some rubber to make it comply.

If you are only doing a few mm of tweaking a heat gun on the rear would be fine.

As mentioned, get a bit after trimming and practice. What you don't want to do is blister the front surface (I've used a damp towel in the past to rest it on).

Given that you are going for the SVA deadline, I'd agree that a bit of ply wood with a coating of foam over will probably be your best bet and spend time later on the ABS dash.

I guess what you are looking for is a bit more curling on the bottom corners from sort of
