I'm getting close to the point where I have to trim the boot of my cabin scooter. To save having to spend months filling and sanding the walls and ceiling ready for paint, I'm going to cover the whole lot with carpet and roof lining material. A whole lot of sins covered there. The trouble is, the "floor" area has lots of bits to it at angles and at different levels so it won't cover in 1 piece just folded to fit. My first thought was to cut 3 or perhaps 4 pieces and glue them to the GRP. This would make repairs difficult though. How can I join my automotive grade carpet together that is 1) easy 2) can be done by hand with no special tools, 3) permanent?
I think you might be asking for something that is cheap, quick and good - and everyone knows you can't get all three at once!
Good quality carpet tape would be my best suggestion - it won't be permanent, but it is easy and can be done by hand. If you can find a friendly
carpet shop, they will have heat activated tape that is exactly what you want, but it needs a small iron to apply it.... but it is permanent.

Could you use velcro strip. One side stiched to carpet, the other glued to panel

Carpet tape and velcro are your friends..
Carpet tape will allow you to join multiple pieces together - and it's normally bloody strong
Velcro will allow you to make it removeable
oh - and a spray can of contact adhesive to attach the velcro...
You should be able to get rolls of velcro off the bay...
