Aluminium Seats
MakeEverything - 13/2/10 at 05:40 PM

Does anyone know how to make one (a pair) of these? Im looking at thinner, lighter alternatives to try and avoid chopping the roof, though i was in the rain in the kit the other day and it leaks like a seive!! - Mostly because of its shape.

Something like this;

It's no help but I'm sure remember seeing somewhere some plans for seats a bit like that which could be marked out and welded up.

Can't just remember where though

Most of the strength in that ally seat will be from the swaged holes and folds..

I recon it would be easier to make a buck and mould yourself a carbon seat instead...

Simple version in the Haynes Roadster manual p 118.

Ive got a swaging tool (25mm only at this point) and i dont have the space for fibreglass / carbon setting, though what i do have is two sheets of 8x4 ali.

'zackly what I've done. It's lovely to use. Strangely SWMBO won't let me make one for her, as she doesn't want me making a mould of her arse...

IIRC MK9R (Austen) on here built some ally seats a few years back - might be worth a quick U2U.

MakeEverything - 13/2/10 at 09:01 PM

Quality, thanks Mike.

Are you able to from the drawing or do you need CAD files? Ive asked rorty if he could send me the CAD file of the seat so that i can add tabs and rivet rather than TIG!! Cheeky or what!

MK9R - 13/2/10 at 09:34 PM

Send me you email address, I have set of cad drawings for the seats I made

Incredible. The guy is a genius. Notice his workshop is completely spotless in every picture? - Not like my shithole garage!!

Amazing what a bit of space can do!

boggle - 14/2/10 at 09:09 PM

had alittle play today rich...

is this what you are hoping for?

MakeEverything - 14/2/10 at 09:15 PM

Fantastic Barry!!!
What did you fold it with?

They look the nuts, and will look even better with swaged holes and dressed edges. Youre a Laser Legend!!

What do you reckon postage would be?

boggle - 14/2/10 at 09:19 PM

not sure on postage yet....

just trying to find the ali edging.....took 15mins on the waterjet to cut, although this prototype is from 1.5mm 5083 ali...

folded it on a wooden bench by hand, not ideal, will do the next ones on the press brake....i could do you a pair all tig welded if its easyer for you?

l0rd - 16/2/10 at 12:35 PM

It would be good if you could give some more info on the weight of these for the rest of the members.

I believe that they coulld be a lot better than the fibreglass ones.

dan8400 - 4/9/15 at 09:01 PM

I realise this thread is five years old, but did anything ever come of these seats? Are they available or any drawings?

Thanks
Dan

mk85 - 5/9/15 at 06:11 AM

look on ebay there is a guy on there doing custom ones

dan8400 - 5/9/15 at 07:14 AM

Thanks for the reply. I was really looking for a diagram to make my own.

Thanks
Dan
