Casting a steering wheel rim
Dale - 13/5/10 at 04:10 AM

I have a cut down mgb steering wheel that I need to put a new rim on. It has a steel ring around it but I need something to finish it . I was going to make one out of maple but have now been considiering doing one out of plastic or resin.
I would not mind going for an ivory look or mother of pear. Going vintage looking.
Any hints on easy to use materials-( also inexpensive methoods.)
Thanks
Dale

I just googled "how to make a steering wheel rim" and found several sites, including

http://www.secondchancegarage.com/public/93.cfm

http://www.ehow.com/how_5525143_build-wood-steering-wheel.html

...though they are about wood rims.

I once saw a guy on the idiot lamp make a 'wood look' steering wheel from a standard plastic one.
He rubbed the rim down and sprayed it an ivory colour.
Then smoked it over a candle.
Using a feather he gently brushed the smoked rim to create a grain effect.
Then he sprayed over the 'grain' with a coloured transparent laquer, appling enough coats to give the desired depth of
colour he wanted for the rim.
More coats = darker rim.
