Few dash questions...
David_17 - 22/9/10 at 05:54 PM

Made a start on my dash today, just have a few things i need to clear up before it's too late.

Firstly, do the red arrows in this pic need a radius, or just the green arrows?

Also, will 6mm ply be ok covered with 3m carbon fiber vinyl?

Hope someone can help.

Cheers

Dave

It's my understanding that both red and green arrows will need the 19mm radius

One way to achieve it is with some split pvc 1.5" pipe, screwed to the edge of the ply, mitre the pipe to cope with the corners. Leave it bare, cover it afterwards so as to cover the screw holes, and all will be well.

Any edge you can touch need a radius
19mm if no padding
5 mm if padded
Be aware that a 19mm radius is in effect. 38mm pipe

Does nthat mean if you use a bit of foamy stuff covered in say vinyl a 5mm radius is all thats required?

Not that simple. The padding has to be deemed dense enough to protect you in an accident. The exact requirements are in the IVA manual but there's certain amount of interpretation involved.

To meet the padding requirements you would probably need something like a faily stiff rubber tube or hose, cut in half, and stuck to an edge that was at least 10mm wide (12 for safety) which leads into problems with the corners, you would need to thicken the lower edges with glued on pieces of ply.

I reckon you would be better off not covering the plywood until after the test, which will allow you to use the plastic pipe trick suggested above.

I can see why you are trying to address the appearance and IVA issues first time, but you are giving yourself other problems by doing so.
