Seats and Harnesses
pekwah1 - 21/12/10 at 09:55 PM

Hi Guys,

Just a quickie, for the IVA, do i actually need seats in my striker, or would the metal itself with the harnesses be ok?
Also, do i need a harness for the passenger side to go through an IVA?

Cheers,
Andy

pretty sure youll need a seat as it needs to be tested as per the regs in the manual.
also if the cars intended to take a passenger youll need to fit a seat and belt on that side too.

hmm, not really, can only be tested if its there. eg, windscreens, they're in the manual, but you don't have to have them

good question though... what does a seat do? in a car you'd buy, it makes it comfy but they don't have any real sides to hold you in, but we build cars and can use an aluminium seat, so why not just have the bare metal?
what about a seat made of expanding foam in a plastic bag? squish it in and sit in the car til it sets. perfect shape

as for harnesses, i think if you don't have them, it might get put down as a single seater, so you might come across issues later, if you ever have an insurance claim for example

yeh it was more about the seats really, being a lanky b*stard i actually find it better with no seats...
The harness mounts are all there already so that's not a problem, just need to get another harness!

maybe if you padded the metal floor and bulkhead with memory foam or something? maybe 2" thick or so would make it comfy and look like a seat?

pekwah1 - 21/12/10 at 10:41 PM

i'm not bothered about comfyness or appearance to 'look like a seat', just wasn't sure if you need an actual seat for iva

blakep82 - 21/12/10 at 10:44 PM

i don't think you do, but i think an IVA tester wouldn't be happy if you don't have one. looks kinda unfinished? thats why i'm suggesting some 2" foam so it looks more like a seat to keep him sweet. i was think of how the tester would want it to look, not how you want it to look lol

Pretty sure you do need a head rest these days so something to bear in mind.

My Phoenix passed SVA with a big foam pad (bench seat style). I made it out of packing foam.

I think you need a head-rests now as part of IVA, but I didn't.

I still have the pads, although probably a bit mouldy, if you want them (not worth posting).

Check the manual on whether the passenger needs a harness, but unless you want to register as a single seater I would have thought it would be necessary.

Ok, fair enough about the screen not needed but you definately need head restraints an strictly speaking if you want to be legal with a passenger at a later date then the car would need to be tested as a two seater
if you ever intend taking a passenger you wouldnt be insured if the car docs state seats as 1
cars can pass with no padding but they usually have a seat that resembles a seat not a bare chassis

yes you need head restraints for the IVA (they could be seperate from the seat)

but other than that I can't see the IVA having any problems with squab seats

the squabs would have to be securely fixed or they wont pass as the manual states

Note 2: In respect of a seat that comprises of a “lift-out”
backrest and/or squab it will be considered secure providing,
when in the operational position, it is located such that there
is no possibility of accidental lateral or longitudinal movement within the
vehicle whether it is in use or not."

I guess it'll depend on the testers oppinion of whats well enough located then.....

yea if they were a snug push fit between the rails on all four sides it could be argued that they wont move when sat on

How bare is Bare? You don´t want edges exposed, during an accident you have very little control over your limbs. Hitting Not So Sharp edges during an accident may result on cut/Bruised/severed parts of your body.
