Mechanical speedos

am looking at changing all the clocks from a digidash to classic gauges.
i am hoping to get matching old smiths instruments including rev counter and speedo.
at the moment the digidash takes its speed reading from the drive shaft, where as one would asume all the older guages are echanical cable fed ones.
how awkward and tricky is it to put all the stuff in to make a mechanical guage work? as im assuming its not going to be a doddle
cheers
chris

Also the digi dash will be for sale when this is complete

im sure you can get classic looking modern gauges?

They might be worth looking in to so you get the look but able to keep the electronics you have already?

If you have a gearbox with a speedo output then you will just need a suitable cable , most Ford and smiths speedos seem to be 1000 turns per mile so as long as the wheel sizes and diff match your gearbox speedo drive ratio then it should be ok , if not you will need to change the ratio for correct calibration. You would need a 90 degree drive box if you want to keep the cable in the tunnel or else you can run it through the side of the tunnel and across the drivers floor and back behind the dash.

make smiths gauges, i'm sure they do electonic gauges, but classic looking, so you can have an electronic speedo. easier to set up than cable drive

You could try Speedy Cables. They manufacture Smiths gauges with an optional SVA compliant bezel. They will also supply the speedo cable and can calibrate the speedo for your tyre/diff set-up.

I bought a classic Smiths clock from them to match my speedometer and have been very pleased with their service and prices.

I've just noticed tha the above link, http://www.caigauge.com/index.html is Speedy Cables under another name.
