Dashboard - Gearstick - Help
ej74 - 30/3/12 at 04:44 PM

Per my other thread I intended to fit a extension turret and move the gearstick forward.
However one has already been fitted and extended with the gear linkage (12" in total existing gearstick to old chopped down gearstick.)

However, the dash is in the way and based on the contours of the screen and panels there is no way to move or extend/ shorten it - i have provided pics - at mates rates going to cost 500 to 600 to sort out.

The only option is to really refrubish what is in situ and hope it tightens up the gear change (QS kit is ready to go into anyway).

From the forum is there any other way i can appraoch and find a solution.....

Many thanks in advance

dog legged gear lever?

Not quite sure I understand what you're saying, but most people desire to move the gear stick further back on a type 9 (assuming that's what you have fitted) gearbox. I left mine standard and really it was too far forward - yours looks ideally placed to me. I'd be more interested in moving the handbrake out of the way to give better elbow space for gear changes.

(apologies if I've misread your post BTW)

The gear change is very sloppy.

By moving gearstick to original position and forward we thought by eliminating the remote linkage it would give a better gear change in conjunction with the quickshift kit.

But of course the dash is in the way and a big job to remould and modify the dash !

So my original question is can i buy a remote gear change linkage from anywhere ? it is about 12" from old gearstick to current location.

Many Thanks

What sort of gearbox is it? 4-speed? 5-speed Type 9?

ej74 - 31/3/12 at 05:26 PM

2.0 pinto
Type 9 - 5 speed

I've just bought one of these off E-Bay. Looks good quality but I haven't fitted it yet so can't say how well it will work. My intention is to fit it with a quick shift. It moves the lever 135mm back from the original position.

OK - how are you at making stuff? If you're not afraid of a bit of machining then you might like to look at this:

DJ's remote gearshift

You can make it extend as long as you like (oooer!). As a bonus you get a quick-shift as part of the package!

Thanks for the help guys

I have a RD extension but this only shifts by 5" and its too far forward and under the dash (big bill to modify)
The remote linkage works but is sloppy !

Is there any other remote linkage that would move the gearstick back by 12" from original position on Type 9 gearbox)

Sloppy change is the remote linkage we think

Cheers

My other posts show bit of the linkage in bits !

Thanks David i will see if we can machine something according to your plans.
Does your solution provide a mount plus input to the original gearbox that you can extend backwards ?
How do you therefore extend to new location - whats the linkage ?

Sorry maybe being slow its early and off to catch a 12 hr flight ! its not fun because it work!

The thing is that the original gear linkage connects to a round shaft that goes into the gearbox extension - the lever twists and push/pulls the round shaft. So my extension just extends that round shaft... it's a lot more direct than the Westfield type extension.

It makes more sense if you take the gearstick out and look into the hole - even clearer if you have the box on the bench and knock out the thin metal cover that lives just behind and below the gearstick.

I made my remote using David's design , works really well and only cost me £0.92

Can anyone fabricate the gearbox extension according to David's plans for me ?

I am willing to pay more than 92 pence it cost the person who replied to the thread earlier

daniel mason - 5/4/12 at 06:25 AM

are you sure you can reach the gearestick if its moved 12" forward. i know when in strapped in my harnesses i cant reach the dash?

ej74 - 5/4/12 at 01:53 PM

12" back sorry from the original location

Open offer with cash if anyone can make a extension for me per David's plan with remote a remote linkage.

Offer of a passenger ride in my GTR as well to seal the deal !!

Glad to say its fixed we stayed with the original linkage and machine up some parts and new bearings.
The gear change is 75% better
