Hi all,

Does anyone know what production car uses the VDO speedo cable to a type 9 box, it is a small squared end , measuring about 2.5mm in size. The gearbox is a type 9 - 5 speed and uses the circlip retention method.

I bought one from Fleabay, but the speedo head end is all wrong, far too big on the 'square' section and the threaded collar is too small for the VDO head as well.

I could get one from Westfield , but they surely can't have them specially made for the car, so it must be from a normal production car - but what ??.

Its also quite short as well, the broken one I have here that came off is just 49 inches end to end, although this could be longer as then I can route it far better than the short one.

As the type 9 is a Ford box, pretty sure that they would only be connected to a Ford or Smiths speedo. You could try contacting "Speedy Cables" who would build you a one of cable to suite your requirements. HTH Ray

Thanks for the link, it sounds like it is indeed a one off cable then - not good for replacement in the future .

I will see how much Speedycables will do it for and compare that to WF prices.

As I will have to get this made, what length of cables are people using?, as I said above the original cable was quite short and had to pop through the tunnel side at ankle height and into the car to get to the speedo head, I would far prefer this to remain outside of cars interior for as long as possible, I will have a play around with the wrong cable I bought from Fleabay and see what I need .

Just an update to my question, which I have managed to sort out in true locost style, by modifing and using a mixture of both cables to make one that works.

As the cable I bought from Fleabay had a bigger 'square' end on it ( and it needed to be smaller) all I did was slowly file each 'flat' down until I reduced its size - simple really when you think about it, then I had to de-crimp the steel speedo head connection of my broken cable and re-crimp it back onto the cable that I had just bought - how easy was that !!!!

I still have had to run the cable inside the car at ankle height however, as the only fix for this would be to buy those 90 degree drive units and I can't really afford one of those right now, besides its been like that for 18 years anyway.

So, moral of the story - Don't dispair too much when you buy an item from Fleabay and it does not fit - just sit back, have a smoke and a coffee and modifiy it........

Hoping to get the car back on the road before the summer is out, best get back in the garage then........
