Are there any useful rules-of-thumb for positioning the mounts for a harness crotch strap?

I suggest you take a look at some of the belt manufacturers sites, there are very specific recomendations. From experience the Schrott one is very comprhensive on the subject of mountings as is Willans.

as above, the Scroth handbook is full of dire warnings of getting it wrong,.. the 750mc guys are helpful, esp the rgb.
