Locked Seatbelts. Seat Belts

Season Greetings to all.
I have a 1995 Mustang from which I removed the seatbelts for a friend that wants them.
The seatbelts were working fine, but after removal, they won´t release. This is, they will retract OK, but won´t release readily, they will release some 10 mm at a time with a clicking sound.
Does any of you have a clue of what is going on and what can I do to fix them?

OEM inertia seatbelts will often only pull out smoothly when in exactly the right orientation as they are when fitted in the intended car. The clutch in them will engage in other orientations thinking the car is rolling/stopping quickly etc and so holding the passenger in.

As above even swapping left to right alters the angle and stops them working.

I'm intending to reuse my MX5 seat belts, and I've found if I mount them at the angle of the back support they don't work, I'll need to use a bracket or post to orientate them correctly.
