happy new year everyone
i have been trying to find room for a mini heater under my scuttle and it seem to be a tight fit

Alot of Tiger builders use a Polo one apparently, worth a look.

Cheers

if its just for screen demisting, try an electrical one. you can prob make summat out of 12v hair dryers - likely from a caravan accessory shop.

I got a mini heater to fit but it does take up a suprising amount of space.

watch how you pipe it up, or you could have a bad accident like hicost did.

Used a heater unit from Stafford vehicle components {I think} probably wouldn't go that route again , not becauase of any problems with heater. I.M.H.O next time I would perhaps look at a heated screen at around £250? . by the time you have brought a normal screen and the heater it works out about the same if new parts are used P.S get some thermals. If I do not want a windscreen then is there any need for a heater, are they effective as a proper heater !

Cobbled mine together from a polo and mini. I wanted to be able to vent to feet as well as the screen, but have since cancelled the footwell ducts, as I think the they will require cooling rather than heating. The polo heat exchanger has all the plumbing in the engine bay and so poses no risk to feet, ankles, etc if a hose comes adrift or bursts.

Andyace . No, you do not need a heater without a windscreen . With a screen you need to be able to demist for S.V.A. May be a bit chilly but summer is only a few months away. Rusty

Cheers, I was thinking more of the footwell heater, on a cold day in an open top locost does a foot heater make any difference, is it more hassle to put one in than to wear a thick pair of socks?

theconrodkid - 3/1/05 at 07:14 PM

you need more than a thick pair of sox,top of you legs and your arms are the bits that get frosted most.
i was thinking of taking a big hose, like used on minis to take air from the rad up front to yr feet, maybe with a computer fan in it?

macspeedy - 3/1/05 at 07:37 PM

we have a heater used the matris from the sierra with the fan in custom bent ally enclosures at the mo it only cools or heats the foot wells but a windscreen maybe in the pipe line. i used the sierra vent outlets in a box behind the dash, the fresh air is taken through a bonnet scoop

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/photos.php?action=showphoto&photo=start_of_fan_heater_system.jpg

the fan was then in a box as well the bulk head was at the other side of the heater matrix, valve control was from a mini wire operated under the steering wheel.

here is a partial view

thanks lads it look like a polo is the the one as i plan to fit a windscreen
macspeedy are the miller cans part of the air con system?
ps how big is it as space is tight
cheers dave

What about Tee-ing a hose off the exhaust and plumbing that in the genaral direction of the footwell and windscreen.
As long as you'r engine's in good condition, you shouldn't end up qith much of an oily film on the glass.
Volkswagen used the exhaust as a heat exchanger for their cabin heater and demister in the venerable Beetle.

hello rorty
have i got this wrong or are you sugesting i route exhaust gasses through the dash and footwells
i think you mean a open collector to collect hot air off the exhaust manifold piped into the dash i dont think i will go this route but i dident want anyone else to get the wrong end of the stick and gass them selves
thanks dave

That's exactly what I meant, but I added a little smiley chap to illustrate it was just fun.
I then refer to a heat exchanger as a more serious offering.
So no, no, no, no, I mean yes, don't direct exhaust gasses directly into the passenger compartment.
Hopefully that's cleared that up.
