Westfield pedal clearance
zammobhoy - 10/11/25 at 04:44 PM

Hi All,

I built my SEI widebody Westfield widebody around 10 years ago and have been using it in the summer ever since. Last summer I decided to address a couple of issues to make the car a bit more enjoyable to drive, specifically around the pedals and issues with clearance between the brake pedal and accelerator.
The problem that I have is that under heavy braking, my right foot will press the accelerator and this can lead to obvious issues.
First thing I have done is to fit a bigger brake master cylinder and this has decreased the brake pedal travel, lessening the possibility of interfering with the accelerator. I have also been experimenting with accelerator pedal height to try and eliminate it altogether, with mixed results.
There basically doesn't seem to be enough clearance between the two pedals and I wondered how everyone else finds this on Westfield cars.

Any feedback welcome.

Cheers,

Paul.

Not been cheeky but are the shoes you wear to wide proper race boots would probably suit and help you .

Is it possible to bend the brake or acceleratior pedal bar to give you more room ?

If you could put a photo up it may help us help you

I built a Stuart Taylor Locost, rather than a Caterham or Westfield, because of this exact issue.

I have quite large feet (UK 12) and I couldn't get my foot between the brake pedal and the footwell side to press the accelerator on a Caterham. The Westfields were better but still had issues. The Locost allowed me to set the spacing to suit me - even so I still wear 'special' shoes to drive my car. They are very narrow and snug fitting but work perfectly.

Could you move the accelerator pedal?

Could you make the pad on the accelerator pedal narrower?

Could you shift the Pad on the accelerator pedal to create a bigger gap?

I've got narrow size 11 feet. I can only drive the Caterham if I wear kart boots or socks. I'd seriously suggest looking at a cheap (£30) pair of karting boots as your first solution. After that you're into bending / remaking pedals. If I recall my westfield pedal box the brake pedal has a couple of bends in it so you should be able to remake it straighter and gain some clearance. However you need to be careful you're not hitting the clutch pedal.

Lots of people try to make it so you can brake and roll your foot onto the accelerator to aid with heal and toe driving.

If you definitely want to change the spacing, simpler ideas would be to adjust the accelerator so its further down than the hardest accelerator brake press OR bend it closer to the side of the car. It should be easier to move the accelerator than the brake.

Can you remove part of the inner panel where your foot is to gain another 25mm
Then bend the accelerator pedal bar to make more room for the brake pedal

UK size 10 and didn't have problems in my MK Indy.

That said...

Tin tops without a clutch foot rest have irritated me on long drives before.
(used to drive many many miles for work)

On my pedals the bit against your foot can be adjusted left and right. While a new pedal box is going to be a faff is it possible to change just the pedal for one that has adjustment?
