Plastic sheet
David Jenkins - 4/4/05 at 02:17 PM

I've decided that I don't like the panels I've fitted on the sides of the passenger compartment - I've used vinyl glued to plywood, and the vinyl is already starting to come adrift at the edges.

What I fancy using is plastic stuff some people have used to make boot lids, with a sort of grainy surface. Trouble is, (a) I don't know what to ask for in the local plastic sheet supplier, and (b) I have no idea how much it would cost.

Finally, what's the best way to cut this stuff, and to finish the edges?

cheers,

David

Dont know what its called but i would suggest possibly cutting with a stanley knife (depends upon thickness).

If its thick enough then you could always finish the edge with a router (you could always cut it slightly over size and trim it down with a router if its the thin stuff).

I have often used the broken edge of a peice of glass to 'shave' and shape pits of plastic (works wonders on sheeps horns for walking sticks too!)

But surely they sell Indy-shaped bits?

well wont your car be just an inch shorter than the MK on the 2 sides?

The tranny tunnel could possibly be cut out of 1 indy side panel or maybe 2?

mookaloid - 4/4/05 at 03:36 PM

I am guessing they have to cut it first! or maybe they could cut it to your dimensions.

May be worth a u2u to Snoopy just to ask

Thinking about it I didn't use my side panels, if you can think of a way to get them you can have mine for a small consideration

Cheers

Cut it with a fine blade in a Jigsaw and file off the edeges, worked a treat for us.

MK supplied stuff is oversized anyway and needs trimming down to fit so should be big enough to cover your requirements. Cuts well with a Stanley knife with decent quality blade

ABS - that's the stuff I need!

As for getting it from MK - it'll be cheaper to buy it in Ipswich Plastics than to drive to MK (or pay shipping)!

david,

i'm afraid i don't have any u2us from you.
please send to type r1.
(hope i'm not patronising you).
kindest regards,
dom.

David Jenkins - 8/4/05 at 10:07 PM

Odd - one of my U2Us was a reply to yours, so it should have exactly the right address.

Nothing too secret anyway - here's what I sent...

"Dom,

Sorry for not getting straight back to you - I wasn't expecting anyone to offer MK inners!

I'm still at the "thinking about it" stage: I want to tidy up the panels but haven't decided how to go about it yet. It's either

1. Fix what I've got
2. Fit plastic panels
3. Copy '907's idea of fill-in panels between the chassis members (if you've ever seen his car, the trimming is looking to be immaculate!)

The other half of the plastic sheet saga that I didn't mention is that I was thinking of using some to make a boot lid - that's still undecided at the moment.

So - I won't take up your offer just at the moment, but thanks anyway. "
