Gimme some bloomin seats!!
RazMan - 16/1/06 at 10:10 PM

I'm back on the seat trail again having decided that my Lotus Elise seats are a little too 'sit up and beg'. My GT has a low roof and I need the headroom. Width is not a problem (except the width of my backside)

I need a pair of seats which:
Are quite laid back, almost like a karting seat.
Extra wide for a 6' 2", 17 stone salad dodger
Ideally silver or grey fibreglass with smooth finish
If not already trimmed they need to be trimmable - even rubber pads are acceptable

I know that there will be seat manufacturers reading this so come on guys, what have you got for me?

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:13 PM

Can do these in grey gel coat but better still why not have the entire face in carbon fibre Rescued attachment Wide smoothy seat side view.jpg

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:14 PM

Can tissue the backs if you are concerned about the matt finish (done anyway on carbon version)

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:17 PM

Inserts available that need to be trimmed to suit

welderman - 16/1/06 at 10:23 PM

Still pondering on those seats for the Mini. What are the sizes and i will measure the Cobras i have at work to compare.

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:35 PM

430mm wide at widest point and 875mm to top of seat from floor.......fit 6ft 6" 17st easy and comfy to boot.

Humbug - 16/1/06 at 10:39 PM

Welderman - I should think your avatar must have really bad nipple rash by now!

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:45 PM

smutty bloke has some ointment for that nasty rash

They certainly look the part Triton but are they angled back more than the average seat?(this factor is vital)
I am sure that the carbon fibre looks great but it isn't the look I want - silver grey gelcoat would be fine and weight is not a concern.

welderman - your avatar is hypnotising me again

Triton - 16/1/06 at 10:59 PM

Razman....I can do some magic when making the seats to create more angle of dangle....what angle are you after?

jonno - 16/1/06 at 11:00 PM

Are Vx220 or mx5 seats adjustable, just a thought !

RazMan - 16/1/06 at 11:07 PM

They are too thick in the base IIRC. I'm even thinking of trying thinner underpants to get more headroom

Triton, the dangle angle wrangle sounds promising - have you got a drawing of your seat so that I can compare with other seats. I probably need an extra 5-10 degrees IMO

Here's a very laid back one - a bit too far though I think.

Triton - 16/1/06 at 11:13 PM

Drawing! blimey what's one of those!!

I have an outline i borrowed from somewhere that i can add the dimensions to if that helps?

Or you could mount the seat at an angle using side plates as i can bond the inserts into the sides

RazMan - 16/1/06 at 11:25 PM

The trouble is when you lay the seat back, the front rises and pushes your thighs upwards.

If you could post a pic of the side view it would help me to visualise the angle.

Have you got anyone in my neck of the woods with one of your seats?

Here's a fairly standard jobby

RazMan - 16/1/06 at 11:26 PM

and from the side

Triton - 16/1/06 at 11:32 PM

Don't think I have sent any to Essex.

I will have to fill in the dimensions tomorrow as don't have a seat here with me.

welderman - 16/1/06 at 11:36 PM

Thanks for the seat size. I'm off now to lube up those nipples.

RazMan - 16/1/06 at 11:42 PM

Here's a Cobra standard bucket - these are very upright and a bit of a tight squeeze width wise. My missus got her butt stuck in one in Halfords once

Fred W B - 17/1/06 at 08:38 AM

Raz man - have you tried wedging a plank of wood into the car as a dummy seat behind your back at the angle you want to lean back to. Then just measure the angle by using an bubble degree gauge. You can then measure the angle of other seats. I sit with the back at 30 degrees from vertical FWIW. Most standard touring car seats seem to be only 10 deg from vertical. It doesn't sound like much, but try it. You might imagine you need 45 degrees, but that would be extreme

Cheers

Triton - 17/1/06 at 08:43 AM

The witch's hat seat is same angle as Locost rear bulkhead @17degrees the others are nearer 25 degrees.

fesycresy - 17/1/06 at 08:50 AM

Triton,

What's tissue on the backs of the seats ?

Did you get my email regarding the dash boards ?

Cheers.

tadltd - 17/1/06 at 09:32 AM

Our seats have the angle your looking for. Depending on which way you measure them, it's a 35 degree back rest angle from vertical (55 from horizontal).

We used the technique Fred mentioned when designing our seats because we couldn't find one on the market that would suit the LMP, the closest we could get was the kart seat shown in your picture. So we used that as a 'guide' and added leg support. There's a pic of them in this forum area and in my photo archive...

Here ya go:

RazMan - 17/1/06 at 11:07 AM

Steve, The LMP looks as though it is very similar to my GT, at least in driving position. I think I can get away with 25-35 degrees which means your seat is probably the closest so far.
I U2U you shortly mate

Fred, thanks for the tip regarding angles - although I havent got a bubble thingy I am pretty sure that your seat angle would be about right too. It gives me a good guide regarding what to look for

Fred W B - 17/1/06 at 05:10 PM

Razman - Just rechecked my seat angle, actually is 32-33 degrees

Cheers

Fred WB

Triton - 17/1/06 at 06:59 PM

Surface tissue provides a better visual finish to the rear of the seat..And the angle is 30 degrees.
GRP seats weigh 4.5kgs
Carbon 4.2kgs
No need for extra mounting frames as built in mounting points

timbo7 - 17/1/06 at 07:22 PM

Ok...now I'm getting a little interested here.

I'm looking for a set for my Caterham SV and by feck I'm not shelling out £600 of a pair of GRP tillets, even if rimmed in gilt edging.

Alot of the seats tilletesque I've sat in are too flexible and has Triton points out I prefer the back section of the seat to be a better finish.

Can you guys supply rigid, stronger GRP seats with the option of runners fittment?

I'll also be looking at either suade/alcantara fixings at the required areas. I can get my hands on the carpet finish Tillet use for the Caterham and finish off the seats as look alikes.

Prices guys... ?

timbo7 - 17/1/06 at 07:32 PM

pics of all angles would be bonus guys...

cheers

chrsgrain - 17/1/06 at 09:24 PM

RazMan..

Where did you get those seats???? They are exactly what we've been looking for! Especially the inserts, they look perfect - any details??

Chris

RazMan - 17/1/06 at 09:31 PM

I got the pic from an eBay auction here:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=8028900898&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMEWA%3AIT&rd=1

The auction has ended but the contact details are still there. The guy's name is Len and he is very helpful.
I havent a clue who makes them - he is a distributor.
I liked the inserts too (not my choice of colour though) - a good compromise between race & road.

Triton - 17/1/06 at 09:32 PM

£190.00 per pair any colour delivered .

Cheers

Thanks,

my prefered option would be some Triton seats with those inserts I think...

Chris

Mark Allanson - 17/1/06 at 09:37 PM

I wish they had been available when I was building my car! Shiney

RazMan - 17/1/06 at 09:39 PM

Have you got those measurements Mark? Also where are the mounting points located?

chrsgrain - 17/1/06 at 09:45 PM

Another question for Mark - are you open to visitors? Not sure when will be in the area but would be nice to have a sit in the seats!

Chris

Triton - 17/1/06 at 09:51 PM

More than welcome to park your bum in a seat next time you are in Cornwall.

timbo7 - 17/1/06 at 10:31 PM

Can I see the backs of the seats... have they got much thicker composite to prevent side flex.. the MK ones have a strengthened back section I think

Triton - 17/1/06 at 11:02 PM

They have a second skin laminated on whilst main section is till on the mould, not stuck on afterwards. Rescued attachment Rear of smoothy low sided 2.jpg

welderman - 19/1/06 at 12:02 AM

Can you do the back of the seats shiny too.

chrsgrain - 19/1/06 at 05:08 PM

With reference to Razman's photo and information about the burgundy inserts a page or so up the thread, Len Swan at Wildmore cars sent me this email;

Hi Chris

Inserts are available seperately at a cost of 69.00 pound each seat plus post and packing at 12.00 pounds if you would like some please ring me on XXXXXXX

Thanks

Mave - 19/1/06 at 06:17 PM

Similar cushions are also available from Reverie, at similar (starting) prices. They have a lot of different choices in colour and material though (I'm considering them for my seats too).

Marcel

RazMan - 20/1/06 at 10:15 AM

Found 'em

I think I'll give their seats a miss though - my chosen one is over £2000 inc vat!!

[Edited on 20-1-06 by RazMan]

Triton - 21/1/06 at 11:31 PM

To make the seats with a gel coat back will require new pattern then new mould, you then have the problem of two seats to make one so the price will reflect that, making them nearer £200 each.

I can use surface tissue as the last layer to achieve a smoother finish with a look similar to flocking.
Silver grey pigment is available no problem.

With recent happenings the seat I had lined up to be trimmed has yet to be taken to the trimmers for assesment.

Cheers
Mark

RazMan - 21/1/06 at 11:46 PM

Thyanks Mark,

The tissue option sounds as though it would be ok - the seat backs will be visible but its not a breaking point.
The silver gel coat is a definite plus.and if blue upholstery or pads are available it just gets better.

One question though (well two really ) Is the 30 degree angle feasable and are there side mounting points built in?

Seat angle is ok and I can make them side or base mounted as long as I know which beforehand.

Mark

Or you could send them to me for flocking of the seat backs in black! :- )

I shall be ordering a pair of seats from triton shortly (Paypal account is nearly at £200 target) and it makes sense for me to flock the backs of my own. I will post some photos of the results.

Triton - 26/1/06 at 09:33 PM

Cool....which type of seat mate? Will the flocking hide the matt finish enough then?....you know what is coming next...

How much....
Cheers

High side, normal width, smooth front in black. They are for my Indy. Like the photos at the beginning of this thread.

Should hide the matt finish pretty well.

As for how much... will have to see how much materials i use to do mine. Should be up to my target by the end of the week so will be able to tell you soon.

Cheers.
