Steering wheel size?
NS Dev - 16/3/06 at 10:02 AM

What diameter steering wheel do folks recommend for a fully book sized car?

I'd guessed 11 inch but just wondered?

It all comes down to personal preference - you'll get 10 different answers here!

10" is probably a bit too small, and 13" is probably at the high end.

I've got a 12" wheel, and it brushes against my legs so I couldn't go larger. I have not trouble turning the wheel at any speeds, so I could easily go smaller if I wanted, though your hands can start to get cramped if you get silly about it.

I bought a 12" just because they tend to be cheaper on eBay than the 10" ones for some reason

I belive the ones that Luego and Mac1 sell are 11" if thats any help...

cheers folks, sounds like 11" won't be a bad bet. my current manta one is 13" and too big really.

I used the original Sierra wheel for my SVA, which was ludicrous as it was downright dangerous!

Fortunately I trailered the car to the SVA so didn't have to go too far - mind you, watching the well-over-six-foot tester trying to get in and out was entertaining...

I've got 12", but I wouldn't use it as a rule.

Antique!! that joke is positively pre historic!!

I've had to go for a 10" wheel because I can only just get into the car with that in!
would be easier if I hadn't mounted the drivers seat on runners.........

I must have my steering shaft higher than most- as the wheel I am cutting down is 15.75 inches and cutting it down to 11.5 or 12 ish inches. I had an inch or 2 of room with the big wheel but I may be able to lower it down know when the wheel is reduced.
Luckily it will just require shims.

First car has 11" - too small, Manta had 13" - too big. Latest car has 12" - ahhhhh, nice.

Doh, 11" ordered, ah well, it'll be reet!

David Jenkins - 17/3/06 at 09:13 AM

11" will be fine - don't fret about it!

iank - 17/3/06 at 10:18 AM

What's right depends on steering rack ratio (and if power assisted), width of tyres, user strength/preference, engine weight and how you are using the car.

So there isn't a right answer, just a right for you and the car

Personally anything less than 12" doesnt feel right to me. At the end of the day it depends what you are used to i guess. Ive gone for 13" this time (mainly cos it was cheap (nowt!) and came with snap off kit attached).
