Hi a bit of a daft question
what does the fire wall between the engine and the driver ie scuttle forward face have to be made of can it be wood or is there some spec it has to meet

It's called a firewall because it's supposed to protects the occupants in case of an engine compartment fire. Wood is NOT an option. Steel is favourite IMHO.

Steel is the kiddy! Fully welded, not just spotted increases the tortional ridgity of the chassis as well as protecting you.

Nailing and glueing some ali or wood is a bit futile imho.

so how come my mates mk scuttle is fibreglass and the bonnet is fibreglass so flames would come out of there quicker than through wood

because in the time it takes to burn through, you'll be out anyway... and if you're somehow stuck in the car, you're probably lelled anyway.

Yup. My mk's got a fibreglass scuttle/firewall and bonnet. In fact all the bodywork is fibreglass.

Isn't the steel / ali around the footwell part of the firewall?

Sorry shouldve said external bodywork. Yes the interior panels are steel/ally, but it's open where the steering shaft goes through the driver's footwell panel. And since the battery tray/scuttle is fibreglass it doesn't make any difference to the fireproof-ness.

its the scuttle bit im on about my footwell bulkhead is metal so il be makeing it out of wood

There is NO SVA regulation re firewall matereial.
If youre gonna race it then thats a whole new ball game.
