going to make an alloy fuel tank, what guage?
Moorron - 4/1/07 at 09:25 PM

Just removed the nice and shiney s/steel fuel tank from my indy to replace it with an alloy one. Main reasons are to save weight, fit the sender unit and to add a fuel return for future jobs .

But i need to know if 1.6 alloy is ok or too thin, i can use 3mm also, but if 1.6 will do i can save even more weight.

So, is 1.6 too thin or not?

Many thanks.
Andy.

1.6mm will be fine. Suprisingly strong when all welded up

great news then, makes it easier to work with. i must b saving about 10kg on the tank alone.

How big is this tank?

18swg (1.2mm) would have done the trick and saved even more weight.

Cheers,
Craig.

16swg is more forgiving i.e easier to weld
