OT - Stopping my Rubber perishing...
PeterW - 1/6/07 at 02:03 PM

Ok...

Series Landrover transfer box stick and handbrake gaiter are rubber, and are forever perishing. Is there anything you can treat rubber with to keep is flexible and stop it cracking...?

Clean answers only please....

Pete

I had some stuff called seal saver that I used to put on the rubber seals on my dry suit. As the seals are very thin and prone to cracking / perishing. That stuff works a treat.

Rubbers and plastics harden because the plastisers evapourate. STP "Son of a Gun" is very effective at protecting/cleanning/polishing rubber.

Apparently it is also very popular with people who have a rubber or PVC fetish ;-()

3M has a marine grade rubber cleaner/conditioner that is pretty nice. Look for products called conditioners to maintain the softness of rubber.

Reminds me of a joke too, but you said to keep it clean

tell me about the handbrake gaiter - mine lasted about 1 year before it split - reason I reckon being cheap Crad/pad-dock parts.

Buy from the LR dealer or genuine parts is what I would suggest.
