No, not the sort that involves reclining seats and steamed windows, the aural stimulation variety. How many of you, if any, have bothered with a car stereo? Is there any point? Can you hear it? Are you generally too busy savouring the finely-tuned howl of the engine to bother? Or is it a case of wind+road+engine noise makes all but a jackhammer-defeating volume inaudible? Feedback will be most welcome (plus it means I can cut a bit more off the donor wiring loom ;-) )
personaly i think you need to concentrate on the road even more in a 7,radio would be a distraction wouldnt be able ton hear it anyhow

I'm planning on putting some form of music in although it'll be the most crappy stereo I can find as it'd be far too easy for someone
to grab it!

I may wire up the stereo that came with the Sierra.
If it picks up Classic FM, then fine. If not, it'll be put in the same place as the rest of the unwanted Sierra bits.

engine/webers etc you wont stand a chance. And remember on one side you'll have a f off exhaust 2 foot from your ear!
You could of course buy a Z3.
Rob Lane posted a while back that side screens made a BIG difference to his car noise wise.
You just need a stereo with enuf power.....but dont forget the gold plated fuses! - and the 300 quid a metre special speaker wire

Its operation is just like the trumpet speaker on your trusty 78 radiogram, but is inserted into your ear...
Dual use- acts as earplugs, and allows easy listening to all manner of tunes, some even in the Popular Parade of Pops!!

8 tracks were made in the usa until about 1986. You are right, there is a shyte load of music to grow into an oap by on cart.
However, my music is stuff like queen.
Big advantage is you cant get boy bands on 8 track 'cept osmonds!

Err, going back on topic (sorry!) I made an intercom box and we use some pc headphone/microphone thingies that just take up one ear so the other is
free for hearing the traffic etc. (This is for when we have helmets on longer trips, otherwise you just shout )
Anyway, the intercom box has a 3rd input that can connect to a portable radio/cd player/mp3 player/whatever and by default this is what gets piped
into the earpiece. But press a small switch on the console and the inputs flick to the microphone so driver can hear passenger and vice versa. Release
switch and its back to the music.

IMHO the only In Car Entertainment you need is a gear stick in your left hand, a steering wheel in your right hand, a throttle under your right foot and plenty of round abouts.

For those who wish to have a bit of music or traffic reports telling where the radar traps are you could go the route of small speakers mounted in
the headrest of your seats. The Pontiac Fiero had them in there gt version and gave the ability of not having the blairing outside of the car.
Unless thats what your looking for.

The whole point ,for me anyway of this type of car is too be able to actually enjoy driving.

different types of driving and the locost is a bit raw if you know what I mean. I got to Stoneleigh after 60ish motorway miles with no windscreen and
had to wait 30 minutes for my hearing to come back. If you are just going to run round the local back roads it's a different matter.

Arent some of you missing the point a tad. headphones are only illegal in both ears. you can still have mono. I like the mounted speakers idea. But then my locost is goning to be finished when petrol is £90.00 a litre at this rate!
Some MX-5's had speakers in the headrests - wouldn't be hard to add "wings" to your head restraint and fit speakers.
But lets face it, if you want to listen to the wireless you'd hear it better with a cup of tea in the kitchen
I really don't think headphones are illegal here in North America. I'm also quite sure deaf people are allowed to drive. I would even think
that the wind buffeting in the cockpit at highway speeds could cause deafness. Many people wear earplugs when riding motorcycles and open cocpit cars
on the highway for this very reason.

would be nice to have some music from a MP3 player, talk with the passenger and talk handsfree on the mobile phone.
I have MX5 (Miata) seats with speakers in the headrests in my TVR Tasmin and they are just fine, allowing me to hear the stereo at any speed. -much better than the factory setup both in sound and comfort. Also, I fround that wearing earplugs for longer trips in my old Westfield Eleven or on my motorbike made the event much more enjoyable and less tiring. That been said, my hearing in the higher frequencies is almost gone!
I might wire in a ciggy lighter socket so I can use my satnav system in the car.
Now I just need an add on which gives reads out pace notes for you
I have a cd player in mine, and it is nice to have. When driving around town it is turned off but when I went to Le Mans this year it was
nice to get rid of the constant noise of the exhaust (which went on for 6-7 hours each way) and listen to some of my favourite tunes. I enjoy the
sound of the car but not for hours on end.
I have side screens fitted and can still hear the music at 90mph and talk to the passenger (if I want ) And when the hood goes on it gets rid of
all the little noises you don't want to hear.
I use my car for hours upon end and have never regretted fitting the radio.
