carbon dash
2b_pablo - 6/9/07 at 09:48 AM

finished my carbon dash yesterday. Not that there was much wrong with the old one but Im a bit of a carbon whore!

car came with this mess:

then I made this (mdf trimmed in vinyl):

then I decided to go carbon fibre. The carbon sheeting wasnt strong enough to take the weight so I kept the old mdf dash, removed the vinyl and 8 million staples and cut a lot of it away (every lb counts eh?)

using the mdf as a template I cut out a piece of carbon (a mask is essential!) and glued it to the MDF. Made holes for my 3 autometer ultra-lite gauges (fuel oiltemp and oilpressure), the vapour unit (speedo/water temp) and the 12vpower socket (from a vag).

I also bout 3 mounting rings for the gauges to angle them towards me. Nice little touch very happy with them!

And lastly I fitted a Bright6 warning lamp unit to replace the vapour surround. With them not being in the line of sight they werent very useful. Im going to get the little ali surround for the Bright6 fascia to spruce it up a little.

Fitted no problem and very happy with it

Weird, I am about to start making a replacement for mine at work. I have a beautiful c/f dash but it does not have an appropriate radius for SVA, so i'm making another!

Unfortunately, photobucket is blocked at work, so I cant see your handwork!

Double post, sorry!

Mine was SVAed long ago so no radius worries for me

Just need a little edge trim along the bottom edges and its done.

Nice and simple, elegant looking dash, just how Id like it to look.........

However, I cant tell from the pics, is the Vaypor flat or angled towards you as well ???

It looks like the gauges will require some trim at least for the day of the SVA. The bottom radius will also need some thought.

Edit: ignore the above, it's already got SVA. Though a good bottom radius could save your legs in an accident.

Other than that it looks rather nice (and I'm not a big fan of carbon personally), pointing the gauges at the driver is indeed a nice touch.

What is the power outlet planned for?
