Dash bolts in black
Steve Lovelock - 8/3/08 at 09:19 AM

Hi,

I have spent a long time building my dash and I want to mount it onto the scuttle using black socket countersunk head screws. But I cant find anywhere that will sell these things in a way that will not rust. Namrick will sell me some but said that they might rust and that is something I dont want to accept. I ideally want M5 bolts about 30mm long. Any ideas on where I could get them?

Cheers

Not sure I've seen countersunk in black anywhere, You may be better off getting standard stainless dome head bolts or what I used for my aeroscreen: a pack of black anodised ali motorbike screen bolts. They were about a tenner for 8 including special nut things.

Check out places like pro-bolt

I used the "blackened" bolts at first and they rusted in about 26 seconds...

I bought a large pack of stainless dome headed M5's but (as above) you can get anodised ali bolts in black for motorbike screens on ebay...

Use stainless steel ones and spray them before you fit them (you might need to touch them up after fitting too). The only black ones I've seen will definately rust if they get wet, they are high tensile screws used for machines and tools. You may be able to get black plastic caps to fit onto them.

Hi, I have got some anodised bolts from from 'tasty nuts', they do countersunk in colours.

Dry Wall screws from any building supplies are black, rustproof and countersunk. Better still why don't you put a rubber "u" shape trim around the edge of the dash, pull it back to insert the screws then when it's released, bingo, no screws to be seen.

How about button head bolts - and you can save about 10 grammes too. Think how much faster you will go (and no chance of rust)!!

hex button heads would be better on a dash. you can get them in black (high tensile) flavour but it is not rust resistant.

can of balck paint sorets it out,

alternatively if you can drill the dash accuratley and space them out neatly, then no reason to hide them so use stainless.

It's not structural, so black anodised aluminium bilts should be ok - available from Halfords for bike applications.

Decided on the dome headed screws in the end, wanted black but they work out very expensive so I went for stainless. I'll paint them if they stand out too much.

Thanks for the help.
