Covering with vinyl
Alfa145 - 17/3/08 at 07:00 PM

Just about to have a go covering a few bits in vinyl/leatherette and camping mat. I've tried on a sample piece but struggling to work out how to do corners without leaving a horrible fold/lump in the vinyl.

Anyone have any advice or perhaps pics showing the back around the corners so I can improve?

Cheers

Rob

Wow!

That looks fantastic!

Is that a pair of air vents below the stereo?

Cheers,

Some vinyls stretch more than others...

Also some stretch only in one direction and not so much in the other.

Don't forget you'll need to cut some daggers in the corners to avoid a lump....

Daggers? What are they?

BenB - 17/3/08 at 09:43 PM

They're little V's in the material. If you just trim the material oversize and fold it over you'll get ridges and creases on the dash-side.

If you cut little Vs down to just before the edge of the dash (leave a little space for stretching) it won't crease...

Somewhat like this

We call 'em 'darts'!

Try and do the job inside or at least on a warm day - the vinyl will stretch much easier - failing that you could use a hairdryer.

If you leave the vinyl in the sun for a while it will make life easier. Warm vinyl stretches much easier.

And only cover the face with the foam rubber don't pull that over the edges.

cheers for the replies. It's mainly the external corners I'm struggling with now as no matter how I do it I always get a lump
