Is there a after market speedo that works with the type 9 speedo cable?

yes - Smiths do a mechanical gauge and probably others too.
the problem though is calibration - you need to supply the details at the time the gauge is assembled; get it wrong and you need to pay again to have
this done - this cost is the reason why almost all after market speedo guages are electronic as it allows the user to set them up.
for a mechanicl speedo, the speed indicated depends on speedo drive gear, diff ration and tyre diameter - all 3 can vary from the manufacturers
original model hence you need to be pretty sure you have the correct infor for calibration.

You can have your mechanical gauge adjusted at Speedy cables.

You chalk mark where the tyre touches ground and fix some kind of pointer to the gauge end of the cable. Then push the car forward say 20 feet and
count the number of revolutions on the gauge end. From this and the rolling radius of your wheel Speedy can apparently calibrate your speedo.
This is the theory anyway. Maybe someone on here has had it done ?
I'm thinking that maybe it's as cheap and easy to buy the electronic gauge. Above calibration costs about £50.

Had a Mini speedo recalibrated a few years ago by Speedy Cables but if you have to pay for calibration on top of the purchase price it could be expensive. At least with the electronic type if you change diff ratio, wheels tyres etc you can reset it yourself.

ETB do mechanical guages and will calibrate to match your axle gearbox ratios
not true - when I was looking at speedo there was one or two that would include calibration in the purchase price.
I wasn't confident enough that I would get it right so I paid the extra for an electronic one.
As it turned out, ,my calibration for this guage was within 5 %; but would have failed SVA as it was reading low.
