Shorten sabelt 4pt. harness - SVA??
maartenromijn - 11/10/08 at 07:23 AM

Hi,
Anyone knows if it is SVA-proof to shorten a Sabelt 4 point harness??

I bought a 4 pt. harness from internet the other day. Now I am trial fitting the seats (triton grp) and harnesses. The lap straps as well as the shoulder straps are too long. In the most short adjustment they are still too long to hold tight.

Can I take the harnesses to a company who can shorten them? Do I need a test report? Will the SVA inspector know it is shortened? Or is it just easier to get new ones?

Any tips what type of harnesses to buy, and where?

Get new ones.
I think it is actually illegal to repair /modify belts, but anyway, would you really want to?

Yup - sell em and get another set......

Sounds like they are the saloon ones, unless the listing made it really clear you might be able to ask them to take them back.

Or as above, stick em on Ebay and buy some new ones. Just out of interest, what sort and colour are they? My mate's after some blue 4 pointers.

They are red. I bought them second hand (in good condition) but I can't send them back.

Do I understand there are 4 pointer made espacially for locosts/ caterhams etc.?

The company I know also makes harnesses for freefall lifeboats, so I do know that it will be safe. Anyway, I think I will sell them and get proper ones.

Yeah the shorter ones are usually referred to as clubman or caterham and the longer ones are called saloon.

I got some on ebay a couple of weeks ago. £39.90 the pair with bolts and washers, brand new. They seem really good. If your old ones look good, you might get most of your money back.

Hi if they are new send them back to the manufacturer Sabelt in your case and they should shorten them for you. All other belt manufacturers offer this type of service.

Cheers Matt

Yeah, unfortunately I got them secondhand.

I checked sabelt.co.uk. It looks like I should get one of these: http://www.sabelt.co.uk/kitcar.php . Or are there more types which are short enough?

I would also go with 3 inch shoulder straps, I crashed in a locost with 2 inch straps and it left marks.....

either of the bottom 2 top ones as far as I am aware won't pass sva cos of the twist buckle. Which in all honesty is a load of bo***cks because standard emergency services practice is to cut the straps to clear them out of the way rather than fanny arse about undoing buckles.
also availiable from willans (more expensive)
