Well done Speedy Cables

Apologies if this is in the wrong category.

I gave Speedy cables a really odd-ball request. I asked them if they would calibrate a Morris 1000 speedometer to the drive from the Peugeot 205 gearbox and also to calibrate the inset fuel gauge to a MK1 Escort tank unit. If they could do that I didn't think the odd 13 ft long speedometer cable with Morris one end and Peugeot at the other would be a problem.

Well, they did it. Fantastic, I'm really pleased.

You might ask why and that's a very good question. It's because I had the parts and wanted to reduce my stock. However, I still have not learned that this is not always the best way.

In the early days of the Trials Car build, I tried to use as much as possible from the donor Peugeot and this included the steering rack. I went to a lot of trouble to make sure there was no bump steer etc etc and when I connected the steering wheel, yes, the steering went left and the wheels turned right. Cortina steering arms go forward, Peugeot backwards. Instead of cutting my losses and buying and fitting a new Escort quick rack, I went to France and paid £75 for a secondhand lhd rack. Upside down, this works fine but it's 4 turns lock to lock. I wish I'd thought it through.

Back to the speedo, the trials car is going to be as light as I can possibly make it and the Morris speedo, similar if not the same as a Mini has the fuel gauge and all the warning lights built in. The only other gauge will be water temperature so very minimalist. But it will have a heater!

Damn it, I wish I'd thought of that!

Speedy Cables are the business! They made my custom clutch cable and I think they are about to start making a rev counter to match my mate's original dials from his '57 Karmann Ghia - which is v.cool!
