Initial carb setup for first run
DaveP905 - 7/4/15 at 02:25 PM

Hi all

I've fitted ZX6R carbs to a 1.8 CVH, whats the best needle size to start at for the first run and how many turns out on the needles?

Davedew - 7/4/15 at 03:05 PM

I've got GSXR 600 carbs on a 1.6 CVH.

Needle 'E' clip is in middle groove. 160 main jets. Base mixture screws are 2.5 to 3 turns out.

Should get you going. Had mine setup on the rolling road as was nearly perfect.

Make sure you balance the carbs as well.

What you using for ignition control?
I could send you a Megajolt map if you need one?

Cheers. I was gonna use stock ignition until i get mega-squirt.

Do you mean the pilot jets are out 2.5 - 3 mm with E-clips in middle position?

The pilot screws are the ones in the bottom of the carbs.
Screw them right in then 2.5 to 3 turns out.
The needles which go up and down with the slider on my carbs are adjustable. They aren't on every type so you might not be able to adjust them.

All the ZX6R carbs I have seen have adjustable needles.

These are the needles right, in the float bowl

Nope, they are your fixed jets, the idle air screws are inside that casting tube that are outside the float chamber.

The one you have marked up in yellow as the main jet is correct.
You can either buy the size jet you want or drill them out.
Make sure you take it out to drill it though.

The pilot jet you don't touch.

You want to adjust the air screw which is located inside the casting of the carb.
In you pictures they are the part that is touching the red silicone pipe.
Do this all the way up, clockwise. Then undo it anti-clockwise 2.5 to 3 turns.

Ah I see, thanks all.
