Reducing back pain and numb-bum syndrome
I cover a fair few miles at work (at least half an hour each way) and the locost will be doing the same. Thing is I've had back problems, plus
after an hour or so in the car my rear is getting numb and my back is stiff, even though I consider the car I have now as pretty comfortable.
Can anyone recommend any seats that would help me out so I don't look like an old man as I roll out, or is it something I'll have to put
up with?

The absolute most comfortable seats are also the cheapest.
Make your own foam and binbag seats.
Simple instructions here, should get you going.

Sweet, do you know if that base can be fitted to runners? Also would I be able to get a back for it and do the same method?
I can picture sitting my girlfriend down for half an hour for the passenger seat!

If you want to get really fancy you can use that foam seat to make a buck and make some thinner seats.
see my brothers blog:

Looks more like a cradle than a standard seat I'll have to bookmark that one
Is it possible to use a standard car seat and rip all the foam etc off it? Just thinking of making it a little easier to set everything together
because I know I'm going to slip up somewhere and then I'll have a seat that won't fit or I can't get out of...

I had to put my seat more upright as it was making my neck and shoulders ache. I can't drive lying down it just doesn't feel comfortable,
I moved my seat forward so my arms are bent more and I'm much better now.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

You could use something like a single skin kirkey ali racing seat. They're pretty rectangular (ie the foam make it comfy) so would be a good
place to start if you fancy doing a two-piece foam seat....

Looks good, looks like I could make a couple of cuts and have an adjustable back with the aid of a bolt and welded on nuts too

On a slight tangent, i have had 2 slipped disks in the past 2 years including a bout of nasty sciatica
One thing that i would recommend to anyone with back pain is Pilates, i've been doing it quite a while now and i have not had a single complaint
since strengthening my core muscles, apparently 90% of all back problems is caused by losing strength and stability of your core muscles which places
undue pressure on your spine joints.
Oh and you get to see lots of fit women bent over on all fours

Sciatica's the worst, first time I got it I was on the floor thinking "How the hell can I have back pain that bad it hurts my
knees and still be concious?"
Pilates, isn't that something about holding a big disc and rotating? Or something to that effect, I'm sure I heard about big elastic bands
too....

But is it the seat that is causing the problem? Maybe it's just sitting still that is causing it, and there simply isn't a seat that could
be bought or made that would fix it?
It may well be that a different approach is needed (not sure what that might be, though)

It might well be a combination of both because I can sit in other chairs fine although I do move about a bit, but then I've had other cars and
some have been really good (Nissan sunny springs to mind) and some have been woeful (Panda)
You can't really move about much in a car so I'm eliminating the other cause as much as possible

Yeah Sciatica is worse than any other pain or injuy ive ever had!
Sort of, Their are some exercises like that.
It is quite simple stuff you do like kneeling on all fours and lifting alternate knees/hands off the floor but keeping you hips stable, dosnt sound
hard but it is not easy to get right!
I really could not recommend it enough to help with back pain!!
Have a look at this: http://www.pilatesfoundation.com/newsite/what-is-pilates.php

Pilates is great... just try to find a class with younger women and don't fart in class when you are in odd positions
For the back pain, might be as simple as installing seat heaters? My back problems come mostly from my legs/butt/hips and heated seats make a huge
difference.
