aluminium seats

i wanted to get some aluminium seats made, but the cost of aluminium seems to be a lot higher than i expected

was looking at the Rorty ones, they use 2.5mm aluminium, as an alternative, and i know it would be heavier, but what about mild steel? what sort of thickness would it take to make them as stiff as 2.5mm aluminium? 1mm?

any suggestions? don't know if i'm too sure about GRP ones yet. not seen any i like the look of

I'm guessing you've already looked at the Kirkeys?

lol yes, but er, each one (even the cheapest) is like 2 or 3 times my 'prefered' budget for the both of them.

steel has the benefit of i can weld it together, rather than pay someone to TIG it. heavier yes, but easier to make i think/hope

i'm quite fussy when it comes to the look of seats

i did buy a pair of cobra seats at great expense, FIA approved with side mounts (may be for sale soon...) but they're too high, and the harness holes are too high. ideally want seats bolted right to the floor, and not have any threaded bushes in them for mounting, as i won't be able to do the bilts up from underneath anyway, they need to be bolted down through the seat too.

if steel is a possiblity, then i can always get them re-done in ali at a later point i guess

a big yes for the fibreglass ones, I suffer with a bad back but not had a problem driving mine with them in more comfortable than they look

Life is like a bowl of fruit, funny how all the weird looking ones are left alone

was never a fan of the fibreglass ones tbh, as i was saying though, i need something i can put button head bolts through the seat, and bolt it to the plates i've got just above the floor, there's like 2 5mm thick plates welded tot he top of the chassis (the floor is welded to the bottom of the chassis)
the JK composite ones need side mounts by the look of it, and look higher off the floor than the cobra seats i got. doesn't give that measurement on the site to show where how high your bum goes though

er, so what about steel then?

I'd say find some 1.6mm steel and have a crack at making them. I've not seen the Rorty ones but the ones in the Haynes Roadster book look easy enough to make and adapt to fit whatever space you have. You could always cut lightening holes in them (using IKEA hole punches) and then stiffen the edged using the 'block of wood and hard ball' method!

ooh, not seen the haynes roaster ones actually. i imagine they're probably about the same.
here's the rorty ones
http://www.rorty-design.com/files/Rorty%20Basic%20Aluminium%20Seat%20Pattern.pdf
the photos don't seem to match the final drawings, but yeah

steel is about 3 times heavier than aluminium? is that right? if they're not rigid, i guess i can add some sort of steel back bone easily enough.

is there any way i can see a copy of the haynes seats without getting the book? or a photo of a finished one? who has one?

smart51 was making some in steel, he quotes .75mm steel weighs about the same as 2.2mm Aluminium.

Swaged holes reduce weight and add stiffness, though the proper punches and anvil/die's are quite expensive.
