Speedometer confusion!!!

Hi Chaps,

Been searching on here and am getting a bit muddled!

I have a 5 speed Type 9 gearbox with an angled drive (lack of space) and cable going to an original Sierra speedo. I don't know who supplied the angled drive as it came with the car, so do not know whether it is fitted to the 'box with a thread or just pushed in. The speedo is not currently working so I have checked the cable which seems to be fine, however I do not seem to be able to remove the angled drive from the gearbox to check it. It does not seem to want to either unscrew (just spins) or pull out and I am pretty sure I am going to break it if I force it. Is it possible for them to go wrong as I shouldn't think there is much to them?

Anyway I am not particularly keen on the Sierra speedo, and the rev counter also seems to be reading low and unresponsive so I was thinking of changing to something more pleasing to the eye. It looks like I am probably going to break the angled drive as I remove it and a new one will cost around £50 as far as I can see.

Can anyone tell me a cheap effective speedo and sender that will work with the Type 9? Everything I have found so far seems pretty pricey. Pekwah1 (Andy) on here has a set of Racetech electronic dials for sale for £75 which look nice but they do not come with senders and Racetech do not show prices on their website for the senders so I am guessing they are expensive...

Thanks guys in anticipation of any suggestions.

The speedo cable for a Type 9 is held in by an internal circlip. If you look at where the cable joins the box, you will see the circlip. If you take this out, the cable (or right-angled drive in your case) will come free - it has a disc that is held in by the clip, and a tapered square peg on the inner cable that fits into the drive socket.

I made my own sender for my electronic speedo - bit technical though...

Drive will be held in place to box by a narrow c clip which sits inside the lip on the box. get this out and unit will pop out. Worth selling on if you are going for an update to electronic dooda .

Cheers D

must type quicker ! doh!

Thank you both.

Sorry I should have explained better. I understand the circlip connection and I have changed a few speedo cables in my time on Sierras and Grannys, however it is a solid cylinder that enters the gearbox from the angled drive. This is what is confusing me as there is no space for a circlip as the cylinder is tight to the sides of the entrance to the speedo drive. As there is no circlip my first thought was that someone might have tapped some thread to the inside of the entrance, but the angled drive just spins rather than unscrewing. Maybe someone previously tightened the angled drive up too much and its threaded?

Anyways I will get it out one way or another but need suggestions on what I can replace it with to give me a nice looking speedo (that works).

If you can't remove it, why not just leave it in situ and fit a magnet and sensor type to the prop for an electronic speedo?

Will probably go for the magnet idea, anyone know a good supplier?

If I do decide to remove the angled drive and I find a circlip in there then I will post pictures of me smashing the circlip to pieces with the biggest lump hammer I can find !! lol
