Vinyl-Trimmed Dash

Anybody trimmed their dash in vinyl/imitation leather?
Which adhesive (if any) do you recommend?

Would appreciate experts' advice.

I used it on mine, I will check the aerosol tin when I get home (if I ever get out of here !!!!).

I bought it from one of the upholsters stands at donny last year with my vinyl.

I used thin foam underneath as well to give a bit of depth. When you trim your dash use a staple gun (especially round the gauge holes) to hold securely as well. I got a really good finish on mine.

Heres a pic

Dave, Peter,
Thanks for the feedback. I have a staple gun, so I'll do a few trials on some scrap ply.

Dave, I can see that adhesive between the foam layer and the ply will be necessary. Can you then apply adhesive to the top of the foam? Doesn't it react with the adhesive, when it enters the foam cells?

Mine was done the same way , ally dash 6mm foam and spray adhesive, the foam seems ok with spray adhesive but tends to be melted by evostick .I found some vinyl to be better than others for this job, the stuff i used was quite elastic and could be stretched easily.I bought some other vinyl that is no use for anything , it is thin and will not stretch at all, so be carefull when choosing material to use.

I did the same as the above, the glue I used was evostik, pita tbh, I'd suggest some spray glue.

Stapled around the back same as.

Dave A, I've got a similar setup to yours re the speedo. Can you see your speedo with your left hand on the wheel, cos I can't?

Is the SVA man happy with using 5-6mm thick foam over ply/ally? I really don't want to put the radius on the bottom edge. The book just says something like need to be covered in a non-rigid material but does not give any idea of thickness required.

thanks,
Chris

I made a parcel shelf to house some 6x9's in a Mk II Golf I owned. I used some spray adhesive to stick the acoustic cloth around the MDf contours. I bought it from Auto Sounds, would prolly do the job quite nicely.

A bit of slapstick never hurt anyone.

Yep! better use some hi grade glue cheap tend to peel over time. I use Elmitain glue (in canada) with stretchable vinyl. I use to do high end audio install. You can also add some nice touch by cutting forms int the foam and gluing correctly. Used to do that in door pannel... i'm going to post pics if i finde some...

Just finished my third dash (dont ask) used a camping mat between mdf and vinyl,go for the vinyl with the most stretch and put it in the airing cupboard the day before you cover the dash to give it even more give.
Wickes staple gun is spot on and the right dosh.
cheers,
Bob

Hi Lee
I had same problem, I couldn't see speedo. All you need to do is swap the tacho and speedo over, exact same holes etc. Only problem will be your speedo cable.
Cheers J

Is that the formula 27's dash Col ?

No takers on it yet ?

Good idea to have the missus around to give you a hand when you do it Dick lot of pulling and stretching as your stapling ,plus if it goes pear shaped you can blame her
Cheers,
Bob

Thanks for that "interesting" suggestion. Reckon I'll persevere without SWMBO, 'cos it'll only end in tears, otherwise.

Yeah, I've thought of that but like you say, the cable is in the way.

I'm considering making a new dash with just a pedal bike speedo and warning lights.
