bouncy speedo

Just been out for a 30min country thrash and realised when pushing in second or third my speedo needle bounces all over the place, its a MGB GT dial hooked up to a type 9 . Is it a dodgey dial or something to do with the gearbox, or is it normal and i will have to put up wiyh it .
Comments welcome.

If there's a bit of a kink (or even a tight bend) in the cable somewhere, it could cause this. Binding causes the inner cable to slow down for an instant, and when it breaks free it suddenly turns faster for a moment (the inner cable's just a long spring). If it's dry inside the cable this can happen, as well. The other thing to look for (if the cable's fine) is a bit of grit inside the gauge, between the rotating drive magnet (on the gauge end of the cable) and the steel cup that the needle is attached to. That can cause the needle to flick up and down like crazy. Not all gauges can be taken apart easily, though....
