How to refurb my steering wheel?

Just got a "new" steering wheel off fleabay. It is great for size and thickness, but it is vinyl and the black paint or whatever the coating is has worn off in several places.

Is there an easyish, cheapish way or refurbishing the rim (oo-er!) or am I better off buying a new one? I know there are vinyl paints/dyes but I have my doubts about how durable they might be.

So, anyone got experience of this, or any alternative ideas? (so far, I've come up with leather cover - old-fashioned lace-on one if available - and tennis racket handle tape)

Good one! Do the overlapping edges roll back at all if you're slipping the wheel?

Self amalagamating tape would solve that issue?
