finding out your internet usage
does anyone know of a way to find out how much you have been downloading previously per month? Im on unlimited at the min but im considering binning
the house conntection and phone and just using mobile internet, but obviously thats limited usage.

Is it a plug in router to the wall socket as sometimes they have their own web page that can give stats.
If connected to your own PC and powered down when not in use you may still be able to look for logs and work out that way.
for example from my router
System Up Time 147:50:56
Port Status TxPkts RxPkts Collisions Tx B/s Rx B/s Up Time
WAN PPPoA 1934921 2727554 0 417 3344 139:21:37

That's recording packets of data - not bits or bytes unfortunately.
With Ethernet, packets can contain data of between about 64 and 1500 bytes if I recall.
Not sure what happens to it on the ATM side but I think You'll need an SNMP enabled router (Cisco probably) and some network monitoring software
to count the actual data.

If you've got a compatible router, then you can flash DD-WRT firmware on, which enables as much gubbins as you
can shake a stick at, including SNMP.

you will have to watch out on mobile broadband, they a re gits.. especially if you go accross another network... they will charge you for more time
that you actually use !!!!
my boss went to france with his mobile broadband... he did not use it untill he got to france... it said he had been on for 2 hours total but they
charged him for 10 ( because he went across another network ) even though the meter on the sofware they supplied said otherwise

I have one through the devil, I mean 3, and they have a page telling you how much you've used. Mind you the software that comes with the modem
reads about half what they say.
Yeah be very careful with it. Somehow with absolutely no proof whatsoever they told me I downloaded 6gb in 45 mins (not possible, even if I was sat ON
a mobile mast, according to a BT engineer) and when we demanded they prove it their response was "You used it, you pay"
Mind you this is the same people that keep claiming the entire network across the country has gone down when the problem was I didn't put the
sim card in.
Tbh if you're only using it in your home I'd stick with the home one
