206 GTI 180 or Clio sport 172 or 180
Hello Guys
I am toying with the idea of a cheap track day car but keeping it road legal to drive to and from.
The idea is to buy one cheap gut it apart from to Recaros up front, sort the brakes and suspension, fatter tyres / spacers and maybe cage it.
Question is which one to choose, i can get my hand on either or cheap with full MOT's.
Your thoughts / ideas would be welcome
Cheers
Mick

Clio 172/182 is default hot hatch for track. I'm on number 4 and would recommend highly.

Hello,
I'm a true petrolhead and when these cars were new i sold are adults and my wife sold Peugeot. We at the same time had long term demonstrators
as the 182cup in inferno or age(my car) and my wife had a gti180 in blue. These cars were utterly poles apart. The 182 was a total machine and could
tear up a back road, it could do everything so so so much better then the '180'!! I still use the same back roads to go home and I used a
brand new Audi RS3 tonight and I reckon I could do the run quicker in the 182!!!!

I second this comment.. I've owned many track cars and I have to say I'm very impressed with the 182FF I've had for the last few
months.
Like you I wanted to keep it civil for occasional road use so I still have all the standard interior I just added some 4 point harnesses although been
honest it really needs some better front seats as the original ones don't hold you very well on track.
Upgrades so far include DS2500 front pads, Brembo HC front disks, a set of Cooksport springs and powerflex front camber bolts. Also a K tec cat back
system and a set of R888's
I'm not planning any further changes for now as it goes and handles just nice, very predictable and if you want to hoon around it takes it in
it's stride. Try one I'll guarantee it will put a smile on your face..
Ps, Two of my good mates have since bought one after been out in mine for exactly the same purpose, one a 172 and the other a liquid yellow 182.

Good job this isn't the clio sport forum.
Despite all the arguing in the real world i don't think the difference is that massive, i've driven a few now (currently on a ph1 172) and
they all cracking for ragging about.
Have you considered a 306gti6/rallye? Not as torquey but still fun to thrash and handle really sweetly.

i concur with Marco and Kerr...
i love my 182, puts a smile on my face everytime i go out in it....
can't really fault it as track and hoon car!
Me and Marco are doing Cadwell next week in our clio's instead of our MK's...

I can't help but agree.
The little clios are very good on the sprints! And would be my choice

agreed, performance and handling wise its much of a muchness. better to just find once that's belts arent due and were last done by a
specialist, and either have had or budget for renewing wishbones, track arms etc to refresh the front end.
after that its down to spec, I personally prefer the non cups as I like leather and climate. For sake of circa 50kg saving its very little in it.
182 spec is more complicated than 172 with more permutations available.

I'd be looking at £2500 for one with a few upgrades already done. Something around £3k then do some locostbuilder haggling

Agreed, £1000 won't get you that many upgrades so bide your time a look for one already done and don't forget the belts.

1.5k should get u a tidy 172 with belts not due.
1k would get suspension, brakes and a set of 15s ready for track tyres. Defo budget for a bucket seat, only thing that lets the mk2 down is the sky
high driving position!
