ABS sheet for interior

Looking at the interior of my car, the "vinyl on plywood" panelling is already looking tired, mainly due to the cr*p spray upholstery glue I used.

I know that some kit manufacturers offer abs sheet panels, so I was thinking of doing the same for my car. So I have 3 questions:

1. What thickness abs do they use?

2. How easy is it to cut, and to get a nice smooth edge?

3. Can anyone suggest where I can get a sheet in South Suffolk / North Essex?

The alternative is to do what Paul G (907) has done, which is to fill in the spaces between the chassis members with vinyl-covered hard foam. It looks really smart, but I suspect that may be time consuming!

cheers,
David

Try ESP Plastics.

I cut mine with tin snips and got a real good edge.

Second vote for ESP (my dash). Dead easy to cut and work with, used a jigsaw for the complex curves and chain drilled and then filed smooth for the gauges.

MK's interior panel set is pretty good too, comes pre cut, just needed final fettling to get into place. Again about 3mm thick and can be cut with a decent knife / jigsaw.

P.S. If my chassis was as nicely welded as Paul's I'd show it off with inlaid panels!

This is the route I'm intending to go down - and I got my ABS sheet from from Ipswich Plastics - I have not fitted it yet or cut it so I can't comment on that, but I don't think it will be too difficult. I think the sheet that I have is approx 3mm thk.

Ah - I hadn't thought of Ipswich Plastics! I'll give them a visit next week... I won't go on a Saturday, as you have to wait 3 hours to get served...

cheers to all,
David

I've just got some aluminium composite sheet from ebay.
It's made up from a polyethlene core sandwiched between 2 x 0.3mm aluminium sheets total thickness is 3mm,
it is very light and comes pre-finished matt black on one side & smooth gloss on the other. Going to use it to make dash, proptunnel sides ,top. bootlid.boot floor etc paid £52.50 for 1.5mx1.0m + p+p

If it doesn't fit MODIFY it!!
Cheers BriF

I lust picked up some of the same aluminium composite sheet (Dibond) from a local sign place today for my new dash. Paid £10 cash for pieces approx 400x1200 and 400x300

It weighs approx the same as a 1.3mm sheet of ali but it much stiffer.

Lovely stuff to work with - we use it with school kids as it gives quick results and it doesn't split or warp - usually cut on bandsaw/ scroll saw or jigsaw, file edges smooth, draw file polish with fine sand paper , wet and dry then lightly buff if you are a perfectionist
I doubt you are looking for white or bright blue?
