Front suspension options
Following on from this thread...
http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=68520
...I have got myself in a mess and would appreciate the pros and cons of the options available to me.
I have a set of wishbones that I bought from ace with rod ends rather than tubes for polybushes and I'd like to keep this arrangement. It turns
out that I have upper and lower sierra hub wishbones instead of the cortina ones I thought I'd ordered (I have no idea if I have ordered the
wrong ones or been supplied with the wrong ones, it could have easily been my fault, but that's by the by as ace has been sold to a new owner so
I'm on my own). I have cortina uprights and hubs and new bearings. I also have cortina calipers (all working). I also have a mk2 escort quick
rack. I also have a set of 4 minilite style 14" wheels. I bought the bones rather than make them to save me some time (hollow laugh)
I have three options...
1) Sell the sierra wishbones and make up some book bones with rod ends.
2) Use the sierra wishbones, sell the tina hubs/uprights/calipers and buy sierra hubs/uprights/calipers and that mushroom thing. I guess I'll
also need some rack extenders.
3) Just remake the top bone to match the existing bottom bone. I'll need some 50mm steering rack extenders to do this. If I can't get them
and can only get longer ones can I lop the end of the rack arms and cut the thread back further with an M14x2.0 die?
2 is the least work because I don't need to make any bones. 3 is the next because I only need to make 2 bones. The lower bone is 50mm longer
than the book one which gives me a wider track which I guess is probably a good thing. 1 is the most work as I have to make up 4 bones.
3 and is the one I favour because I think the tina setup up should be better than the sierra (is that right?) and I quite fancy wider track (although
mainly for aesthetic reasons) but which would you choose?
Thanks,
Mark

You cant cut the M14 thread further down the TR's because its a rolled thread and as such the diameter of the bar is smaller than 14mm. You can
however take them out and cut an M12 thread on the lathe then make your extensions an adapter as well to attach your M14 rod ends to the track
rods.
I would make a new set of top wishbones which I believe are 36mm shorter than the sierra ones while retaining your current lower wishbones.
I much prefer the cortina front uprights to the sierra ones, so stick with them.

The diameter on the bars on my rack is 14mm (just been down to double check - the rack was supplied by rally design). Admittedly there is
a short section just after the thread that has been turned down to 13mm but it's only 3 mm long so it shouldn't be an issue.
If I was going to make some adapters I'd just make them M14 female to M14 male but to the length I need rather than cut back the rods and then
make M12 female to M12 male. The only reason to cut back the rods would be in order to be able to fit some ready made extensions. If I need to make
some I'll contact Nick Skidmore as I'll be buying some inserts from him to make the bones so he should be able to make the adapters too I
guess.

These top bones are 15mm shorter than the book ones. With the lower bones being 50mm longer than the book ones the new top bones I make should
be 65mm longer than the current bones and 50mm longer than book.

Just to follow this up in case it helps anyone... the westfield rack extenders are 50mm long without the male threaded bit... i.e. that's how
much they extend the rack by.
Option 3 it is then.
