I'm sure some of you will have seen this mini three wheeled car before and I've seen it mentioned on here from time to time. For those who
are unfamiliar, it's called the Peel P50 and I thought it might be cool to make one, although they're not exactly brilliant to look at and
the safety aspect probably leaves much to be desired.
So that's my idea: A P50 for the 21st century. Obvious improvements to the design would probably include:
- Different styling
- A steel subframe with a roll bar and side impact bars.
- Slightly wider and longer with a lower centre of gravity.
- A larger engine (the original was powered by a 50cc 2 stroke smog generator).
-Relocating the engine to the mid/rear.
Possibly giving it four (larger) wheels might be a good idea, too. The fibreglass bodywork, while definitely in need of re-styling, would remain.
I'm sure the result would probably be cheaper and easier to build than the average Locost.

And if you want a Peel - repro shells are made

After seeing that film on top gear I started making my 3 wheeler. It's all Clarkeson's fault. See here for my bodywork thread.
That's a nice car so far, smart51. I like the lights in particular.
But as for the Peel - I think it needs updating.
I thought a four wheeled version might be better and more stable. However, I think finding a differential that's a suitable size would prove
difficult, not to mention expensive. Then again, if your track is less than 1.2m and the weight is less than 250kg, would it need one?

Do you have their details, smart?
I was wondering if a differential from a small car might be suitable, but then again, it's probably going to be quite a heavy, power-sapping
thing.
