Can anyone tell me what the ratio is on the standard sierra diff.

And where i can find one with a ratio of 3.45??

1.6 models except economy:
Saloon & Hatch....3.62:1
Estate.......3.38:1


1.6 Economy.....3.38:1

1.8 models
4 speed and autos.....3.62:1
5 speed.....3.92:1

2.0 carb models except P100

2.0 fuel injected

Doesn't look like theres any such thing as a standard Sierra diff.

What would the higher ration mean to a lightwieght locost.

I think ive got an engine but, will need to get a gearbox and diff. Whats the best one to choose?

The info i needed was for a mate. I know diddly squat about diff ratios

I'm no expert but the high numbers (ie 3.92)have a lower top speed but turn easier and so accelerate faster.

The lower numbers (i.e 3.38) have a higher top speed but get there slower.

Its all just additional gearing like the gearbox but in this case the ratio is fixed.

Need to know what engine you have to recommend a gearbox and diff. The usual answer is the stuff that was connected to the engine in the first place as at least you know it all bolts together.

I dont know loads about pintos.

But a mate is selling a 2.1 (im guessing that would be a 205 block if its been bored?) with large valve head, fast road cam. and webber 45s. Its got 300 miles since it was rebuilt.

Any ideas on the best gearbox and diff to use? How much acceleration/top speed do you lose by choosing one or the other?

Odd, I wonder why they put a higher ratio diff in the more powerfull injection engine?

They probably marketed it as a faster accelerating model. They extra power would still allow it to get to the top speeds I guess.

With the pinto block you could use the type nine five speed box which can be picked up for between fity and eighty quid. The diff depends whether you go independent rear suspension from the sierra or a live axle type from an escort, cortina or capri. IRS is a bit of a chew on apparently. live axles are a lot simpler to fit but are older technology.

How much would a XR4 LSD would, and would it make much difference to the standard diff?

I've fitted a LSD 3.62 ratio. You need to find one with a 7" top mounting and standard drive flange (Cossie and some Granada have 7.5" mounting and large drive flange). Mine was £75 from local breakers. I know W**tfield fit 3.9 ratio unit. It all boils down to how well your engine revs. Well worth fitting if you can get one.

was the ghia4x4 version different from the XR4x4 ?

i have a full 4x4 rear end if you want it.
also a spare saph cos lsd(no idea what ratio that is)
