Help needed! - Ive just been donated a lovely 2ltr Pinto, to replace my ole 1.6--- how?

Anybody done this already? how hard is it? are the mountings similar? gearbox ok? taller/fatter/wider? exhaust manifold the same? why are jammie dodgers getting smaller?

any opinions and advice are, as ever, much appreciated!

Fuel injection or carb?

Cock off or cock on. You choose.

Though i have no experience, i am quite sure that the mounting will be same if from a similar age car. The electrics will probably change slightly, ie different distributor trigger and chip/ign module. Maybe a few more complex things if it is inj etc. Most will just swop over, wire for wire. I'd guess the sensors will be similar.

Look on the bright side, at least you'll understand engines well when you've finished!!!

easy job

i take it the 16 is also a pinto?
if so take the flywheel of the 16(different ring gear) put it on the 20(the smaller clutch isnt a problem on lighter cars, infact it isnt a problem on the heavy cars either)engine mounting points are the same, block is taller so depending on what car its in you might have hieght issues, put the dizzy off the 16 onto 20 ,if you are running a downdraft webber carb then just use a 20 one,if you have side drafts the manifold will swap over from the 16 to the 20(carbs will need a rejet)
exhaust is a straight swap also.

this only true if swapping a 16 pinto for a 20 pinto.if its an xflow then most things are different ie exhaust is on opposite side, gearbox can be used but not much else.

Heres more details-

The engine is from a
1989 2.0 litre Sierra Sapphire Sport (don't ask me what the 'Sport' bit
means I haven't a clue, might just be a badge).
It is on the standard Ford
carb, probably a DGAS or a DGAV. The only anomaly I could see was that the
plug for the auto-choke was un-plugged but the car started up OK?!?!?!?!
Read into that what you will. It has electronic ignition,

This alter anythiing-?

is it significantly taller than the 1.6?

why?... this has been discussed several times on this forum and the consensus of opinion is that the 1.6 flywheel is in fact heavier than the 2ltr.....

but as he already has a 16 starter and gearbox its a straight swap ie cheap.

and as an answer to the electronic ignition question ,just use whatever ignition you have on the 16

aaarggghhh! getting confused now!

Not that it takes much, granted!
So,
I can take out my existing 1.6 pinto, plonk in the new 2 litre onto the same engine mounts
Use the existing exhaust and manifold, use the existing radiator setup, use the new engine complete with starter, carbs, flywheel etc.... or do I need to swap flywheels?
Ignition- do I use whats already on the 2 litre? any downsides?
Is this right, or am I oversimplyfing??

Anyone know how much taller it is?

All opinions most welcome!!

if you have the starter and flywheel from the 20 then use em,depending on the age of the 16 it may have a bedix type starter the 20 will have a pre engage type(the wires to the starter will need moifying to remove old solenoid)
the ignition system that works fine with your 16 will work fine on the 20(just swap the dizzy and any other triggers from 1 to the other)
last thing to check is that the splines on the clutch plate u intend to use are the same as the gearbox input shaft ,some of the 16 boxes had smaller splines if its a 4spd from a cortina/escort .i think the 5spd on the sierras all used the same size input shafts
