After This weeks track day, it has me thinking more about my spare Midtec that is currently sat in a barn.
It has never been finished, but did have the renault V6 and un1 transaxlw fitted.
Before I bopught the car (cery cheaply I might ass), it had been sat outside fora fair length of time, so carbs were full of water.
Anyway, back to topic, My mate Mr Owelly, wants me to put an Audi engine and transaxle in this car, and I can't find a could reason not too.
So, what engine?
And which cars do they come in?
The obvious choice would be 1.8T from A4, A6, A8, but Mr O is thinking V6 or V8.
What do you think? Where is a good source? Passat?
If you have the width - scooby flat four with the gearbox mod as per the wr3 v-storm by scooby bits.
I wouldn't,t bother with the flat four version, scooby bits are Cowboys and SDR who made the kit have gone under. Aside from that under bonnet temps and turbo pavcksging is an issue along with getting the gear change to work. Front wheel drive A4 or Passatt with 1.8t engine, cable gear change, tuneable and plenty of parts available at reasonable cost
I remember some Audis and VWs had longitudinal engines with FWD transaxles in them - that would be my start point.
I have a 2l 4cyl Audi engine and box with driveshafts available. Perfect for a mid engine project. £100.
No idea if it will fit that chassis but I'm designing mine around the V8/01E combo. 300hp/300lbft. Should be fun but I suspect it's a bit long for your application. If you went with something with less torque you could potentially use the shorter, weaker boxes.
Pretty sure the 01E will be too long (looks a long old beast on google images)
Also looking at the v6 engines, they seem to be very wide. What angle of V are they?
Gallons, what engine do you have? is it the non turbo unit?

There's a few versions of the 01E - the 2WD version is a little shorter but not much. The later spec A4 came with a shorter box again (01A?):

The V's are 90 degree, nice and wide and low which is great for CoM height but not great if you have a narrow chassis!

What about a brave move, and use a w8 passat engine and box?
It's not the most efficient lump for bhp/litre, but is compact for a 4l and you might be able to slip a couple turbos on for effectively half a
Veyron.

Engine is non turbo 8v from an 80 Audi.

Looking at the chassis, I am now thinking the V6 may be too wide also. The black Spyuder I hace already has a V6 ion but it looks a lot narrower.
Big engines with big power need big transaxles. This results in a heavy power train. I would suggest that for your car it would make more sense to go
with a turbo 4 pot.
Lets face it when Noble designed the chassis I doubt he rated it for 400+BHP
You could still get 400hp out of a turbo 4pot but it would be as heavy as the V8 (I looked at all the numbers!)
200 BHP would be nice.
I will not be ableto fit a v6 in my road car, but need to look at the track day car to see if the chassis is diferent. It already has the Renaul V6
in so may be slightly different.
I would like the V6, but its looking more like the 4 pot turbo.
If I go that route, which engine do I need to look for, there are so many.
What about the vr6? not particularly light but 200hp well within reach.
I've got an audi OB1 gearbox to use. You might be surprised what you can fit with this box as the driveshaft/diff line is right at the flywheel.
Inline 5 cylinder turbo for the authentic Quatro sound

Aye, there is that. Helps if engine bay space is an issue, not overall length.

I had a build blog but my server went south and took it with it. I've not had chance to reinstate it yet. I'm also finding my CoM is so far backward even with an 01E that I need to push everything into the front axle area!
I think I will continue with my measuring, nit sure if the v6 chassis i have is any different from the one in my garage.

use the Renault 12v engine on a UN1 box . we put one in an Alpine replica , it easily achieved over 200 hp .

Hi there. I don't know how far you've got with this but I fitted a 1.8t and transaxle out of a Passatt into my Midtec last winter.
I've got a zetec turbo and un1 transaxle in mine and my thinking was that I could sell these and still be quids in with the audi conversion.
Turns out that there's not much in it really especially once you start pushing the power output.
Anyway, my point is that the combo fits quite well, probably better than my zetec and the transaxle is much more compact than the Renault one.
I'd thought about the V8 too but I think it would be too long, VAG V6 is quite heavy, Subaru package is too wide
The challenges with the 1.8 are the extra bits such as a charge cooler or inter cooler (normal inter cooler might not fit as you can't have it at
the front), if using the VAG ecu you'll need the fly by wire accelerator pedal, gear change etc.
If I was doing my conversion again though, I'd definitely use the VAG 1.8t package.
Don't discount a zetec on motorbike carbs or TB's as it will fit into your Renault ng3 transaxle and be a lot simpler. It should still be
pushing 170+hp too which is probably the sweet spot.

The vag 1.8 turbo units are very good engines. I had my 1.8t A6 tuned at jabbasport a few years ago. Went from the standard 150 hp to 230hp with just
a rolling road remap and a steel valve to handle the increased boost.
The mechanic reckoned the 1.8t engines are good for up to 350hp without internal mods
Very tuneable engines. Output is dependant on which turbo is fitted, k03, k03s or k04. I think the k04's were fitted on the S3 and cupra R and
these will go up to about 250 before they're maxed out but the engine will take more on standard internals.
