i've found this on the web, but i don't really understand what the chap means when it comes to change a 2.2 lock to lock ratio to a 1.7 ish
ratio.

The ratio isnt changed at all. He's just got lockstops on each end - to stop him putting too much lock on to keep his front wheels fouling something. Its simply a restriction on the 2.2 rack
Without reading it, it the number of complete turns of the steering wheel it requires to go from full lock oneside to full lock another.
But if he's putting lockstops on, thats not full lock anymore surely?

What he says is that his original rack was 2.2 with lock stops (2.5 basically) so he bought a 2.2 and put lock stops on bringing it down to 1.7,
therefore restricting its steering travel

Same as my road car (Fiat Coupe) which has only 2.2 turns lock-lock, but has the turning circle of a nuclear submarine!

ok, but at the end of the article, he says:
"Put it all back together again and took it for a spin to get the tracking re-done. Yep, the steering is quicker, and noticeably heavier too!"
how could it be quicker if he only changes the lock to lock ratio (with lockstop) without changing the pinion ratio??
