Does anyone keep a spare engine?
franky - 28/7/10 at 12:56 PM

I've got the chance of a spare engine/box complete for a very good price, a 3.2 evo m3(mines a3.0). Would it make sense to get it as a spare? It means if/when mine goes bang I've a good motor to put in which you could class as an upgrade in the future too..... Who else keeps a spare, is it worth doing?

Spare - no.

Spares - yes

(spare crossflow built up, spare crossflow in bits, spare zetec for the upgrade at some point)

I carry one in my bus to all race meetings

I haven't got one but if I got the chance of one at the right price then I would.

If you have the cash and the space...
Both highly desirable assets, I would say go for it.
At the moment I have two engines, and I´m trying to sell one, but the people interested on my second one wont pay much, so for the time being, I´m keeping it as it is worth a lot more just in spares say injectors, MAF sensor, throttle body, crankshaft, rods, oil pump, HEADS!!, etc.

I've got a spare pinto which i'm keeping for now (in strait off the donor condition) but its only worth a couple of ££ and is useful for stopping other things blowing / floating away

I've got a spare engine. I suspect it might be scrap but it sits in the corner of my garage feeling sorry for itself. At some point I've going to get one of those mini USB scopes and stick it down the plug holes to see what it's like inside....

What are the chances of the 3.0 M-engine going bang? Surely low assuming its installed correctly?

Andy D - 28/7/10 at 02:11 PM

The Honda touring car team have two spares apparently.. drool drool...

my current one has a few miles under it's belt, they do have a few issues if over revved and mines been mapped to rev to 8200rpm. My lump blown is worth the same as the one I can get, give or take! I was also thinking of all the spare sensors/itb's/injectors etc too.

spdpug98 - 28/7/10 at 02:25 PM

If one came up at the right money I would buy it and keep as a spare, when I used to race my old Pug 205 I had more engines/bits than I knew what to do with

sucksqueezebangblow - 28/7/10 at 02:33 PM

A 'Busa engine came up on eBay at the right price a while back so I am the proud owner of a spare engine in case of any mishaps!

I often get a spare then flog it. Still with a zetec there not to hard to come by

It's a old rule of racing, they only way to guarentee you won't need a spare at a race is to have it with you!

But then some bugger will always need to borrow it off you, so you are assured of beers in the pub after.

Cheers

I have an entire 205 XS in bits in my garage, being able to pick them up for £50 with a dead clutch or siezed beam doesn't help I just cant control my hoarding!

That takes me back, when I was racing the Pug I also had a road 205 GTI and the MrsSpdug98 has a 205XS. Everytime you gave her XS a blast the carb jets would always block up, then once you cleaned them out is was fine again for a few weeks.

I kept the sockets and screw drivers in the glove box ready to whip them out and fix it, had it down to a fine art

You can't have enough spares.
I have 3 engines, 1 in, 1 being rebuilt/upgraded and one to be repaired.
2 gearbox's
4 diffs
Just need another chassis now

franky - 28/7/10 at 05:57 PM

Think i'll have to get it Just got to work out how to get the money for it!!

Having done the maths its worth it and it'll help with wiring up my current motor too!

Have a spare XE sat in bits that's been sat in the garage for 4 years

So far, i've rebuilt the head....

bimbleuk - 30/7/10 at 02:07 PM

Yep always had a spare standard engine ready. When I came to sell my car I sold the modified engine and then sold the car with the standard engine fitted. Got more money that way.

franky - 30/7/10 at 05:27 PM

I have a spare motor now might pop it in the winter after my first summer on the road Its nice have a spare 321bhp lump in the garage.
