Claim to fame?
chrisg - 27/12/08 at 08:45 PM

Following on from john's thread about talent, everyone has a claim to fame, how ever weak - what's yours?

Mine is that I used to go out with Joanne Catherall of the Human League.

Beat that

cheers

Chris

liam.mccaffrey - 27/12/08 at 08:46 PM

Chris thats a really good one!

My Dad fitted Terry Griffiths (snooker player) kitchen that was in the background of a telly advert he was in.

I beat Tim Benjamin when he challenged me to a standing long jump competition!

DIY Si - 27/12/08 at 09:02 PM

My vague claim to fame is having driven the bond Aston from The World Is Not Enough. The one with the rockets in the front and the tuned V8. And in the same evening I was doughnutting the first post production ( I think that's the right phrase anyways) Aston V8 in a field car park at the Goodwood Revival with a completely random passer by as a passenger. Which I then drove over a wooden peg and ripped the under tray off of.
Oh, and I met Prof Heinz Wolf once at school.

I went to the same school as Darth Vadar (the guy who wore the stuff, not the voice)

and I once saw Neil Kinnock picking up Glennys at Heathrow terminal 4

and my wife saw Jimi Hendrix playing live (and she's younger than me!)

John

iank - 27/12/08 at 09:36 PM

Got a blue peter badge for coming runner up in a competition as a kid.

Around 20 years ago I did VR/telepresence demos on both Tomorrows World and Richard and Judy (hidden behind their sofa just in case the computer needed a reboot).

Followed that up by programming a 7dof robot for a BNFL advert - indian dancers around the arm which was bolted to the top of a small knoll overlooking Ennerdale Water in the lake district if anyone can remember it.

These days I work with Nick Frankau (Flt. Lt. Carstairs from Allo Allo).

Not managed to boink anyone famous though.

Edit: Almost forgot, got to shake Phil Winsors hand when he came to open the research centre I was working at.

MikeR - 27/12/08 at 09:46 PM

hmmm .....
met Noel Edmonds and was star struck (i was about 6 at the time)
Went to college with the Verve (year above me)
Cousin has acted in Casualty (Uncle had walk on part covered in blood)
Brother writes computer games (Actua Soccer, Sega Super Stars Tennis, Outrun conversion, errm, eer - i should know more)
I know where NS Dev lives
Friend was on hero or zero as the technical consultant - the film crew described him as the maddest person they'd met!
Friend did the web sites for Aston (until recently) and i used to do independent QC testing for her as a favour (aka does this work on your computer?)
I helped nasa send the mars rover to .... errm, Mars (got a certificate for my involvement as well!)

Yeah ok, rubbish claims to fame.

(edited as i got one of my bro's games wrong)

mediabloke - 28/12/08 at 12:20 AM

A certain Durham cricketer is a distant cousin. Sadly, it's not a skill that seems to have made it to my dad's side of the family...

A few years ago, I stopped as I was on my way home from work, to let a lady put her young children in the back of her car. As she turned around, I got a polite wave from a certain Mrs. Beckham. Could've ended a little differently if it had been the previous day though - I'd have been driving a little quicker.

Oh, and Geraldine McQueen regularly walks past my house (out of drag). He lives just up the street from me.

Do they count?

Francis.

liam.mccaffrey - 28/12/08 at 12:36 AM

drunk in a pub one night we egged on one Tom Shanklin (Wales Centre) to perform some break dancing moves for us. Much to our surprise he quickly jumped on the floor and started busting out drunk moves right infront of us.

this went on for around 40 mins

We ended up competing to see who could spin him around the quickest

would i get in trouble if i posted the photos

Been on a channel 4 programme about people splitting up, not t me splitting up but a mate. They filmed in my house and you see the back of my head and my then 1 year old son peer round my sholder at the camera while i'm teaching my mate to design websites.

Been on the news...just! Me and the Mrs were at a world record attempt where a bloke was jumping a jag over a load of cars and we were in shot on the footage...just!!

Met Jonny Johnson, the famous WW2 fighter pilot at Biggin Hill Airshow. I had just bought his book and met him in a tent where someone had done a painting (Phillip West) of jonny shooting down a german plane, which i have a print of in my office. Jonny signed the print and my book.

Met Depeche mode! Big moment that was!! And met Gary Numan twice....Very big moment for me that was plus i got to sit in his Harvard at Biggin Hill Airshow.

Heres the proof:

Harvard Numan
Harvard Numan

Harvard Numan 2

Fozzie - 28/12/08 at 08:59 PM

I have been blessed by having quite a few...'claims to fame' ......

The most recent was, of course, in Decembers issue of Complete Kit Car.......
Thanks for reminding me Lee!

Not managed to get January's issue ..so not seen 'the letter' .....

Fozzie

Avoneer - 14/12/09 at 09:22 PM

I went to school with Giggsy and use to do a bit of his homework.

I used to produce house music and released a white label that Fantazia and Carl Cox used / remixed.

I once saw a block of marijuana the size of a portable tv.

I used to hang about with Tyrone (from corrys) older brother.

Pat...

morcus - 14/12/09 at 10:50 PM

I know this is old but its the first time I've seen it so I will ad a few. I served Breakfast to Ray Mears a few months ago and I was so star struck that I couldn't talk.
My Brother met the Prince Of Wales once, weirdly it was in Holland, I think it was the 60th aniversary of Opperation Market Garden.
My Cousin was in correspondence with the Late John Peel for the last few years of his life and attended his funeral.

Nash - 14/12/09 at 11:26 PM

First time I've seen it to. There are some great claims to fame here:

Both my wife and I have claims to fame (sort of)

My wife was best friends with Jan Graveson. Who? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jan_Graveson

My claim is more car (kart related) I met Lewis Hamilton as a 14 year old when I was testing at Rye House track he came down with his dad in a silver C Class Merc with Lewis Hamilton Sponsored by Merc McLaren down the side. He took my kart out (I asked him for some set up feedback). Git was 1 1/2 seconds quicker then me out of the box!

My real claim is when he gave feedback on set up and I made the changes I got within 3 tenths of his time! I wouldn't let him back out in it though!

......and breathe!

.....Neil

NS Dev - 15/12/09 at 03:28 PM

I really don't have any claim to any sort of fame!!!

Well, my dad has an OBE, but that's about it!

Oh, and I've been to Le Mans in the fastest accelerating road car - linky

though that was when it was only 640hp, it was 720 when I look a trip in it

Jasper - 16/12/09 at 12:37 PM

I've got a few:

1 - Made page one of The Sun for assault on Pasty Kensit - (didn't really do it of course)

2 - Took papparazi pictures of: Princess Diana, Lord Litchfield, Joanna Lumley, Richard Gere, Bob Geldorf, Kate Moss, Peter Stringfellow and his 16 year old GF on a beach in Miami - made the tabloids, and various other lesser types

3 - Met Cher, all of Inxs, Liam Gallagher, various Playboy girls and page three girls including Jordan and Sam Fox, various boy bands whist working in TV production

4 - Been on TV quite a few times whilst doing news production and in my present work as a vintage teddy specialist on various antique programmes like Cash in the Attic.

Think that's it ...... it's all a bit of a blur these days....

Unlucky, while at the same time being very lucky to get away with having a bike smack into your neck and still be able to walk/breathe.

MikeCapon - 21/12/09 at 09:53 PM

Yeah. It did sting a bit. 3 broken ribs and 2 verterbae. Although Leicester Royal didn't find them. Sent me home the same night despite vile concussion (90 mins unconcious).

Took until another whoopsy in '82 before the NHS spotted the 'previous'.
